If I buy a 8gb iphone to use only as an ipod, but with the hope of using in the future as a phone, is that possible or is my only option an ipod touch? I would like to use wireless internet, which is critical.

The iPod touch has Safari, YouTube, Calendar and as far as I know, the notes feature (along with expandability).
Unless you're sure you want the phone part, there's no need not to just go for the touch.

that and the camera too.

i've actually kinda been thinking about getting the 'phone instead of the touch just so i can have a camera also.....

though i doubt that's what i'm gonna end up doing.

If you're going hack your device, which you will be doing by activating the iPhone without a contract or service plan, then why not just get an iPod Touch 16GB for the same price, and put all the iPhone applications on your iPod Touch for use with wifi?

The only benefit the iPhone has over the Touch is a speaker, a microphone and a camera.

yeah but i feel you with buying the iphone now. I dont want to pay to get out of my contract, nor can I afford the att plan right now. I wouldnt mind getting the iphone and then maybe in the future activating it.

Not a bad idea, but why not just wait until you're sure you want to activate it? It will do nothing more than depreciate, and if a future model comes out for more, you can always buy this one for cheap.

Question:

Does the iPhone Mail app check for mail automatically using EDGE or WiFi, or does it only use EDGE?

I'm asking because I'm also considering purchasing an iPhone with no real intention of activating it anytime, because the camera would be very nice to have, as would the mic/speaker when the time comes that there is an VOIP client for the phone.
