I know it's only 75 minutes since the 3G came out (or became available), but I want to know if I can now trash my USB720 Verizon modem and use a new iPhone as a modem for my Macbook.

With the unlimited data plan, it would make sense to just swap my usb modem and get the iPhone. Just about the same price per month.

AND, if there is a way, is it sanctioned by Apple or is it a jailbreak-esque function?

Thanks,

Jeff

I don't think you can tether the device, but I think someone figured out how to do that with jailbroken-esque software... at least on the first iPhone

I don't know if there is an official way for the 3g.

With the original iPhone it was possible with some command line ssh magic. Since the 2.0 JB is on the way, it is quite safe to assume that this method will work on the 3g as well (terminal and ssh will be available for sure).

edit: There's also a program called tinyproxy. A little bit more convenient than doing it on the command line, but still way too complicated for casual use IMO. Instructions can be found here: http://dragonforged.com/blog/2007/09/tethering-the-iphone-for-os-x.html

THIS is the killer app for me and jailbraking.

I never JB'd because edge was so slow and the tethering would have sucked anyway.

I want to see this happen!
