iPhone AT&T Contract Option

So recently I just acquired an iPhone from a friend who switched to Verizon. The iphone 3G 16gb is HEAVILY cracked. But I know some people who can get a new screen and install it for me.

My question is about starting a new contract w/ AT&T...

Since I dont have to pay for an iPhone at a new or upgrade price... does that mean i can get a data, talk and text plan for a 1-yr contract or other specified length other than 2?

You shouldn't need to sign a contract at all. If you don't get a subsidized phone, you should be able to get a month-to-month plan.

i just feel that at&t would prevent that, seeing as i would be like a "new customer" and that want more $ from me

You need a two year contract anyway. They do not sign up new customers for month to month. You might be able to get a good deal on a new 3gs as a new customer.

In the specific case of purchasing an iPhone from AT&T as a new customer, I believe you're right. That would also be the case if you accept any other new phone at a subsidized price, or sign up for a promotional incentive package that isn't part of their set of standard price plans.

But in the general case, for example where you're buying any non-iPhone outright, or where you're not buying any phone at all, but rather bringing own phone with you and just purchasing the SIM (which you can do from any brick-and-mortar AT&T company store), and you stick with their standard price plans, that wasn't the case the last time I read about it. They allowed such customers to start up their service right away on a month-to-month basis.

Simple:

1. If you're already in an AT&T contract before you got your free iPhone, NO NEED to do anything. They will add a data plan, and not extend your contract.

2. If you're switching to AT&T from a different company, you will need a 24 month or 12 month contract. In that case, buy a $99 iPhone and sell your cracked one on eBay.

Since you already have the iPhone and it is yours you DO NOT need to sign a contract!! All you have to do is request a sim card. Most AT&T stores don't charge to get one. If by some chance they do they are only $25.

Just pick you plan that you want with the data and any text message plan and you are good to go. Make sure to tell them where you work as you may recieve a monthly service discount and possibly get activation fee waived.
