So I want to sell an old iPhone but it has passwords saved to its keychain and they aren’t iCloud, i don’t want to restore the back up to a new phone but am wondering if I backup the phone to my computer will the passwords be accessible on the backup on my computer?

Keychain information is encrypted when on iCloud and Apple can’t read it.

Turn keychain on in iCloud and all its info will be safely stored on iCloud and be accessible from all devices.
If iCloud is good for anything, keychain is it.

hey thanks so much for your reply

i am wondering if I could backup the iPhone without using iCloud and access the keychain passwords from a file on the backup. Or is iCloud the only way? Thanks

With an encrypted backup, the keychain does get backed up, but to the best of my knowledge, there is no app for viewing the contents of the keychain file.

Worth pointing out here. Never use the same email address in any of your keychain accounts as your icloud account. If you hose your icloud account you lose access to everything in your keychain forever with no possibility of sending renewal emails out.

Also if you have 2FA tokens stored in keychain then make sure you have backup codes available.

I know a couple of people who had a bad time over this.

“Never” is a mighty big word as at least 500 million iOS users use the same email address for everything. (Basically everyone)

hey, thanks. So if the keychain is backed up I could restore the backup to a device and the keychain would be present in the device I restored the backup on to? and to confirm would the backup file be safe on my computer I.e no one able to remotely access the passwords if I got a virus etc?

Yep aware of that. How I learned this was a bad idea is my father-in-law forgetting his iCloud password and proceeding to end up somewhere near the top of **** creek when it came to filing his tax return.

Most people I know will forget a password within 4 seconds of creating it too. My sister-in-law is a good one as well. Fortunately she has enough money to buy a new phone whenever she locks herself out of her current one.
