iPhone backup to external HD

so, with the infamous iTunes, the only option that i can find to backup my iPhone 6 is to “this computer”. well, i don’t want it on my laptop, i want it to an external HD and I see no options to do such. I’m not interested in Cloud storage. Is there a way to do this? Is there a way to bypass iTunes for everything!?? (VLC is great)

You can likely back it up to the computer and then copy/move it to another location.

correct. that’s what i’ve done in the past. what i don’t understand is why apple wouldn’t let you select the drive where you want the backup. for some of us without large storage capacity on HD it can be a pain.
