Does connecting your iPhone via Bluetooth to your mac do anything? I did it and it seems to be of no use.

No, it does not. The iPhone's Bluetooth only has a profile for Hands Free, to be used with headsets. It doesn't have any other functions (OBEX for file transfer, etc.).
