Hello,

Short Version: Is there any way to restore the phone without being forced to update iOS?

Long Version:

I was trying to backup my iPhone to my Mac using iTunes and it kept saying not enough space even though there is 400gb free space. So then I started a brand new iTunes backup on another Mac and about 3/4 of the way through it had an error message saying something along the lines of the iPhone was disconnected and therefore backup failed. The iPhone was still connected via cable and showed that it was charging. Now the iPhone is bricked and stuck on bootup with Apple logo.

Is there anyway to restore or reset without being forced to update to the latest iOS? I have just been thoroughly burned by an update on another device and do no wish to update at this stage!

Many thanks!

P.S. I’m not even sure that an update would be successful as the phone storage was very full hence why I was backing up so I could free up space.

First off, let's define brick.

Bricking means that the device is a brick. There is no life at all. It won't turn on, it won't respond to anything - it's lifeless.

Your device is not bricked.

So, moving on…is there a way to restore without upgrading. No. Based on your description of the state of your device, it's caught in the middle ground. The only way to fix that is to fully restore and that's going to force an update.

Apple won't help you either, they'll force an update on you.

So your solution, should you choose to use it, is to connect the device to a computer and restore/upgrade it. I'd suggest DFU mode for that, but whatever will work.

Then just restore from your latest backup.

Note - the fact that you CAN do this is evidence that your device is NOT bricked.

Depends on who you ask:

"for example, a soft bricked iOS device may display a screen instructing the user to plug it into a computer to perform an operating system recovery using iTunes computer software."
