iPhone broke but why?

Here's the deal. I have an iPhone running 2.01 that syncs to my MBP running 10.5.4 with iTunes 7.7.1. I was using the standard maps app on my iPhone when it all of a sudden locked up. I let it sit for about 5 minutes before I did a soft reset. After the soft reset, my iPhone hangs on the Apple startup sign. After seeing this, I plugged my phone into iTunes so I could do a hard reset. When my iPhone is plugged in, it does not turn on automatically so I turned it on like normal. From there on, the iPhone continues to hang at the Apple boot up sign. iPhoto recognizes that there are unimproved photos but iTunes does not recognize it. I then, unplugged the iPhone, held down the home button, and plugged it back in. Nothing worked. I also tried the previous procedure with the sim card out. Thinking there could be a corrupt file in iTunes which causes this, I deleted iTunes and downloaded a fresh copy from Apple. Still does not work. After this, I created a new user hoping it might be a setting but still it does not work. After I couldn't figure out anything more, I made and appointment to an Apple Store and called Apple. The Apple Care told me I already tried everything possible and that it is probably a hardware issue.

Now I am wondering, is it really a hardware issue or more a iPhone software issue. My thinking is that there might have been an app being updated which caused this problem. If it is indeed a software issue, does this mean that Apple only needs to reinstall the OS? Also, what are my chances of getting a temporary replacement for free? Thanks for the help.

Have u tried holding the power and home button down till the apple logo appears then let go of power button and keep holding home button while plugged into itunes?

Well if ur within your 30 days of buying it, id take it back and get a replacement.

This is happening to the old iPhone. I am still within warranty though. I went to the Apple store yesterday and they said it was my computers fault for not recognizing my phone and I need to do an archive install. They reset the phone, I went home and did as they said, going against my better judgement. 7 hours later, my iPhone locks up again. Of course, my computer still doesn't recognize it as it did before! Tried a Macbook, XP, and XP Media Center computers with no luck. Now I have an appointment for Tuesday and have been without a phone for many days and many days to come. I called up Apple Care again and he recommended a new phone should be given to me. I'm hoping for an actual resolution.
