I'm at a hi-tech conference (BlogWorld) when my iPhone's antenna completely bricked (probably because I dropped the day before). I went to an Apple Store and they replaced the phone with a brand new one. iCloud backup restored my settings and such, but I've only been able to restore some of the apps dues to slow wifi, and I had to leave the store for a meeting.

I figured I could complete the restore back at the hotel but the wifi is godawful. I've tried Starbucks with the same result. I have Navigon installed which is roughly 2GB that I need for driving in LA, 3 days later and iCloud still can't finish restoring it.

I can't believe wifi is my only option. Is there no way to restore these apps via ethernet instead? I sync my iPhone with my desktop not my MacBook, otherwise I would have tried that instead.

Pretty cool you dropped your iPhone, internally damaged it and Apple replaced it with a new one for free.

Sorry about the slow WiFi.

Well if you had VPN back to your laptop you might be able to do it quicker. Have you tried to go to the app store and just re download the purchased apps? That will be quicker and you can just get the ones you really need.

Well it was the new 4S and still within the 30 day warranty, so I lucked out there. Still they handled it about as well as you could hope, swapping out the broken phone and restoring from my last iCloud backup from within the store. That alone sold me on keeping iCloud backup forever enabled.

It's just trying to get all the apps back that has me running all over town desperately looking for a wifi network that isn't one step above dial up speed.

Antennas do not brick, the iPhone stop working as designed because the phone was dropped.

Your 30 day warranty means nothing since you dropped the phone. With that logic I could buy a new car go wreck it then take it back and they would replace it.

Give him a break - he dropped it and needed it fixed - he went to the apple store and see what he could do, they gave him a replacement - Did you want him to waste 200 on another one within his period? When they replaced it for free...

Unless you're paying then I don't think you can knock him... It's not like he dropped it and it was shattered and damaged it like crazy, then expected a replacement. If apple saw that where was no significant physical damage and replaced it then, that's their vice. Do not insult or knock what he did because he went to see what could happen at the apple store. Jeez.

Thank you, for what it's worth the phone was completely encased and seemed fine afterward, with no scratches either, but the next day was a different story, that's why I'm assuming it was due to it being dropped. They gave me the impression that because I returned it within 30 days a free replacement wouldn't be an issue.

There is no such thing as a 30 day warranty. The warranty is for one year. The 30 days is the period you can return it for a refund if you're not satisfied with the phone. If you dropped it and damaged it in the process and they replaced it then you got lucky. Normally they would not do that especially now. Apple Genius employees use to use discretion before in such circumstances but aren't supposed to anymore especially with the 4S as it now has the option of AppleCare+.

The antenna was not bricked as antennas cannot be bricked. Most likely when you dropped it something else got broken which led the phone to stop working properly. Regards the Wi-Fi issue I've always experienced a fast connection in Apple stores. I've updated and downloaded apps there several times before and never had a problem. Maybe you should go back there to complete the download.

Umm wow I don't no where to start. OP you might fit in to the category of "needs to read the manual". I hate to be an ass but you should be grateful that Apple replaced it for free. I mean its okay to post on here about the slow wifi looking for alternatives but don't complain about it because then you end up pissing off people who actually had to pay for a replacement or just people in general.

Thanks for the explanations. The reason I thought here was a 30 day warranty was from searching around the board, but people probably meant a return when they were saying warranty.

I never realized they were cutting me a major break since they acted like it would be no trouble at all. Very nice Genius girl too, I explained that the antenna wasn't working anymore and the only thing I could think that may have caused it was dropping it the day before, but they said no problem, had a replacement ready. If I had known then they were using discretion I would have kissed her. :D

Found some fast wifi so I lucked out and got most of the apps restored, might still go to the apple store to get the rest of the apps installed.

Did any of the Guinness talk to you about AppleCare+? It might be something that you might want to think about if you do not already have it.

No, but I'm definitely sold on it now, especially for the iPhone, since I don't expect to be upgrading that for a long while.
