umm, I cannot even imagine what would prompt such a query, but whatever we are definitely all entitled to our various little curiosities;)

I certainly cannot answer this with complete assurance, nor can anyone who is not working on the actual iPhone project, but I am just about positive there is no way this is going into any cell phone sold widely to the public at any reasonable price, however there are some out there. There are a few out there, but it is really for a very special user. As far as I know, you see this type of technology widely used in satellite communication devices for military and specialized domestic law enforcement.
 
Would be nice to see. It being used on the iPhone seeing OSX has a 128-bit encryption for everything thats running on the computer that the OSX is installed on.

iphone to iphone would be encrypted calls but for iphone to other phones no encryption.
 
yes they do. encryption is part of the GSM standard.

Well, I'm 99% sure I'm right. I didn't know either until I looked that up on Wikipedia, and with Wiki, there's always a doubt, but it's still pretty damn reliable.


Plus, it makes sense. If all you needed was a frequency scanner to listen into cell calls, no one would use cell phones. Encryption is an absolute must.

In fact, due to the encryption, cellular calls are probably more secure than analog landline calls, which aren't encrypted. Thats why wiretapping is so easy. Because all you really need to do is literally tap into the wire.

Yet I still know some people who refuse to give any personal information like credit card numbers during phone orders over their cell phone. Morons :D

They are. Encryption in GSM is very, very difficult to crack. While the actual ciphers might be crackable, it still wouldn't let anyone to listen to the calls, since it would also require absolute timing. And IIRC the only time it can be cracked is when the phone communicates with the base-station, so it would also require close proximity with the target.

You could devise you're own language or say learn klingon and even if you weren't encrypted they'd have a hard time understanding you.

(I hope we aren't all arrested for aiding a future criminal...)

lingo it be to long and complicated, back in high school i knew a couple friends that greated their own language which was pretty wicked but no one would understand wtf they were saying
