My iPhone 3GS has (in this order) crashed, rebooted, mixed up some icons (some just blank), re-activated itself when plugged up to iTunes, forgot some iTunes preferences (e.g., encrypt backups), and has also forgotten about the MobileMe account that still appears fine on the iPhone but not known to iTunes. What the hell just happened? Everything was perfect with my new iPhone until it crashed. Any ideas/suggestions? Thanks...

this is happening to a lot of people including myself. my app pics went grey or they duplicated another app. you have two options, sync ur phone then run a restore from backup; or delete the app and reinstall. everything will be fine until you do a hard reset then it will start acting weird again. 3.1 please fix!!!

Hasn't happened to me.
Just restore the phone, but sync before you restore, so you can recover from the backup.

I'm a little relieved to see that it wasn't only me. Had both the mixed up icons and some grayed out too. In the process of restoring now.

I have restored as a new phone (did not lose very much info) and everything is back to normal. This sort of bug seems like it should be an easy fix for Apple...

ok, i found a fix!!! i know just restoring it or re-downloading the app fixes the issue temporarily, but when you do a hard reset it reverts back to the messed up icons (wrong app pics or grey app icon). this is a problem because i like to do a hard reset every night to clean out the ram and any other background processes that might be stealing juice from the battery.

so here's the fix, after you install the new app or do a icon change (new app pic) leave the phone on for 3 days straight. after that 3 days do a hard reset and your phone wont give you a problem with those apps anymore after hard resets. i saw this fix on some other forum and thought it was BS, so i tried it and it worked!!! hope it works for you guys too!!!

just a follow up, it might work for shorter periods of time. i.e. 1 day, 2 days, 12 hours, whatever. i'm going to try different ways and get back to you guys. one thing i did notice was if i left the phone on for 3 days straight the battery would not charge all the way. it would show 100% when i pulled the charger, but after a couple minutes it was down to 98%... sigh.... another problem. this one can be fixed by just doing a hard reset.

I found that if you delete an app off the phone and you put a new app on the phone it will use the icon of the app you last deleted. WTF? This happens all the time to me. I just figured out how it seems to work. New apps taking deleted app icons. I restarted the phone and then the ipod app said I had no music. WTF? I had a few thousand on there. I hooked it up to sync and all the music was still on the phone. WTF? What a mess this is. I NEVER had problems like this over the past year until 2 weeks ago. Apple loves to name OS's after cats. They should've called this one, Stray.

Happening to me as well. Some apps are half icons, some have switched, some are completely gray/white

This just happened to me. Seems to have occurred on mine after a couple of apps crashed. One was an app I got for my kid "Curious George's Dictionary", after I quit out of it, my entire screen when vertically striped whacko and I thought my screen got damaged. It reset the iPhone itself and when it started back up, I got the white/mixedup/half icons.

This definitely never happened in 2.x. It's annoying but it doesn't seem to affect any of the apps behavior. Looks like it just corrupts the Springboard Icon Cache.
