I ordered an iPhone and will hopefully collect it tomorrow. After months and months of waiting o2 have finally decided to release the iPhone in Ireland. (The tariff is obviously higher than in England. We call it the paddy tax.)
And I downloaded the SDK and after reading through some documentation for two hours, I wrote my first Hello World application. And it works.
I was looking forward to writing applications for my iPhone and enthusiastically studied documentation. And that's when I noticed that the developer programme is only available to a few selected developers and not outside the US of A.
Great! My enthusiasm has died after only two days.
Is Steve Jobs trying to become the Mac community's most hated person?
There is no reason not to allow English and Irish developers to join the programme now. And why do I need a key to install my own applications on my own iPhone?
Should I jailbreak my phone? I didn't want to. I wanted to follow all the rules, but it turned out that the "free" and "available" SDK is neither free nor available. It's more like a shareware version.
It doesn't actually create iPhone programs, since doing so requires a key; and the key cannot be bought if one lives in Ireland.
