Just got AirPods for Christmas and I was outside listening to music.
My iPhone died (because it doesn’t like the cold even if battery is full) and the Aipods started playing music from somewhere else.
I was away from any other device for at least 60 feet.
Do AirPods auto connect to unknown devices?
Is there a way to only connect to my devices?
Thanks!

Probably some form of ESP / memory buffer. It probably buffers some of the audio to prevent drops.

The Airpods will not connect to random devices. They have remarkable range, so it most likely connected to an iPad or Mac of yours. Otherwise, the phone wasn’t as dead as you thought it was.

After I wrote this I realized I was wearing my Apple Watch. But the song that was being played was a Christmas song and I do not have any Christmas music in my Watch.
I was listening to Pink Floyd from my iTunes Match account.
The phone died, and I could still hear a very faint voice of a child singing a Christmas song.
I do live a few blocks from a cemetery... lol hope not...

Wow I'll have to take my AirPods to the cemetery and see if I can pick up voices from the dead as well!
