iPhone disables wifi when in sleep.

I remember it happening all the way back on iPhone OS 2, on my iPod Touch.

Does it disable wifi all the time while sleeping? How would one get imessages if phone is asleep with no cellular signal? I've never really noticed with my phone, but my iPad (wifi only) will continue to get messages while asleep. I'd try it out by putting phone in airplane mode and enabling wifi but at work and have no wifi.

Its not that its disabled completely, just the little WiFi icon goes away until you wake up the phone. If you look quick enough, upon waking the device, you will see the icon appear.

If there is no cellular available then WiFi connection gets used.

Wifi is disconnected when sleeping and data is used for small push messages etc.

Disconnecting wifi when no data transfer (ie phone asleep) uses less battery

Wifi-only iPads and iPhones with data turned off will persist the wifi connection. Unless wifi is disabled of course
