As launch day approaches, I get more and more annoyed about their business practices.

Yes, I want one.

But:

1) This secrective behavior just sucks - No known quantities / Stock / etc.
2) The 6:00 pm thing (So every mother and thir grandma can get off work to stand in line). Just open normally and sell until stock runs out.
3) Unknown calling / Data plans until launch day.
4) Early cancellation fee ($175) for a non-subsidized phone.
5) Poor Edge performance.

There are going to be alot of unhappy people come launch day. I just spoke to someone at an att store and they will be only letting in 10 people at a time, and said they typically only get like 10 phones on new phone launches! - Iphone may be different but I somehow doubt it.

Again, I think this practice only leads to fustration and shoddy business practices. I was mad when Apple picked ATT as a partner and now I am just getting more and more pissed off as launch day approaches.

Am I the only one that feels this?

RE:
1) What is so secretive about it? Do you know quantities / stock of all the other phone they carry? The Razor, Q, the Blackberrys. Since when do companies announce quantities?
2) I like it better - b/c, yes I do work and can get in line. This way they can also make it a big opening night media event ;)
3) Wrong.
4) The cancellation fee is for your contract, not the phone. So why wouldn't it apply?
5) How do you know that for the iphone? Test it first ;-)

BTW, I am not even getting one ;-) Not until generation two.

1) Kinda sucks, but not that bad
2) Brilliant marketing (and Apple tradition)...those few Ostriches that haven't heard of the iPhone will ask "Why the heck is there a line???"
3) We'll know sometime next week.
4) That's life
5) It has Wifi...so not that big a deal

This is not a blackberry launch

Something along the lines of the ps3 launch.

Which:

We knew there were going to be like 200-300,000. With apple it is just like, wait in line, oh you are the 11th person (assuming they only have 10 phones) and are SOL.

How many are apple making? No idea.

How about just saying something like this:

There will be enough to meet demand.

or

There will be limited quantities.

Why can't they do that?

With the PS3 launch there were more retailers so your odds were better getting one.

With Apple / ATT there are only like 2000 outlets (ATT stores and Apple Stores) combined nationwide. So some statement on quantiny should be made.

When are they going to announce the calling / data plans? It is pretty close to launch day and people like me are getting more pissed as each day passes. Why wait any longer to announce this? Because most people are going to be pissed when they hear how much they have to pay for this crappy 2G data plan?

I don't think that they need to make a big deal ot of launch day. They have enough hype already, why just keep piling up the crap on top of crap?

Contract

Most people only sign the 2 year contract on subsidization of a phone.

Noone wants to sign up for a two year contract for crappy 2g service (Dial up speeds we are talking here).

Unless their phones are subsidized.

What other motivation would there be to signa 2 year contract?
