I can't find this answer anywhere in the forums. I just wanna know how many falls an iphone can take. Is the screen durable enough for you guys? I'm in a wheel chair so I tend to drop stuff a lot if I put it on my lap and forget it's there.

iPhone durability...

I've only had my iPhone for 2 days but it seems to be very durable. There was a video a while ago around launch in which a man rubbed keys on the iPhones screen, through it on a matted floor, and dropped it on concert. There were only a few scratches and the screen was fine.

I hope this helps give you an understanding of the power of the iPhone. I'm pretty sure even the Power Rangers couldn't scratch it with their megazords. My favorite was the pink ranger, but that's irrelevant.
The shiny bordering of the iphone tends to be the easiest part to scratch. It looks to be made out of the same stuff that makes up the back of the ipods. But that doesn't effect the functioning of the phone.

When you think about it, everyone goes through the baby period with phones. I mean, even if it's one of the phones I get for free when I upgrade, I baby it until I get like 1 or 2 big dings, then it's fair game, I throw it around, toss it on the counter, use it in the rain. It's not that I don't respect it, but it's like, whatever? I decided the first week after I got my phone that instead of apple care extension, I would just buy another phone if it was ever that damaged or if something happened. I mean, I think the fact that you don't need to listen to the voice mail prompt is worth the $600 alone. Hopefully by the time mine falls apart V2 will be out, and I'll just buy it.

I wish I could find an article online about my friend Gina. She has no legs and is one of the BEST softball players in the region. It's inspirational to watch her play, she has the best spirit. She manages to RUN the bases, and FAST - because one day her pinch runner missed the game and she still wanted to play.

Well, apparently Titanium wedding rings do a pretty good job of scratching the screen...not trying to scare you away from purchasing an iPhone though, because I absolutely love this thing!! Just a word of warning that although the screen is extremely tough, it's not indestructible. The other day I reached into my pocket to retrieve my iPhone and my ring scraped right across the screen, leaving a 1 inch or so scratch right across it...I was crushed! Some good news, though - I just got off the phone with Apple and they're fixing it for free! You can't beat that customer service! And you can be sure that I'm buying a screen protector today...

It's got a glass screen, so of course it can break if dropped enough, or at the wrong angle, etc.
If you're really prone to dropping it, I would look for a ruggedized case. Otterbox is supposed to be working on one.

My glass shattered today
The strange thing is I didn't drop it or anything, it was in my pocket. I pulled it out of my pocket and it was shattered right by the home button with cracks going out from there. I have no idea how it happened. The only thing I can think of is I had my keys in with it for a bit and maybe some how either sitting down or standing up the keys caught it just right(actually just wrong). Little pieces of glass were actually falling out right by the home button. My heart really sank when I saw that, I couldn't believe it. I thought for sure Apple was going to say I broke it so tough luck. I took it to the Apple store and they said right now they are taking care of whatever the problem is, no questions asked and no charge. It is being sent in for repair and I will have it back in a few days. That is great customer service! I didn't want to cover it up with some ugly case, but I will be getting one now.

This immediate replacement sounds like a great move on's part. Is it safe to assume that this "good will" only applies to the iPhone and, say, a shattered screen on an iPod will not be replaced as seamlessly?
Actually they are repairing mine, not replacing it. She I would be getting mine back, not a refurbished one to replace it. We'll see. I agree though that it is only because the iPhone is new, the Mac Genius said basically that, that because it is a new product they are trying to keep everyone happy.
I'm waiting on an "ordered" case for mine. Meanwhile I'm using a couple of temporary cases. And when it's naked I take great care in not putting it in my purse, pocket or anywhere with anything else (like keys, etc.).

I have a ding - I was stupid. I must say I'm much more relaxed about it now though. Figure I can always replace the back if I must.
It seems people are getting mixed results when trying to replace a damaged phone. Another thread covers the successes and failures.
I found 2 tiny scratches - very thin lines - on the upper part of the screen and it happened to be my wife's - also tiny - diamond ear rings.
