While searching about the iphone before I go out and purchase one I have noticed that there are numerous devices for sale on a popular on line site with cracked glass, water damage and broken ringers. Seems as though this device has many durability issues.

No. It isn't. Water and electronics do not mix. That's nothing to do with durability, that's to do with user stupidity and irresponsibility.
WTF? That's a durability concern? Go ahead and pour some water on your motorola- I bet it won't work afterwards

Not rying to make this an issue but obviously some of you do not understand. My razor sat out in the rain for 2 hours and after drying it off there are no signs of water damage. Now if people are trying to sell there iphones because of water damage than the device is not that durable, so before I go out and purchase one, I am simply asking questions
Stupidity and irresponsibility might be a big strong, but I agree it's definitely not a durability issue.
If you leave something out in the rain by accident and it get wrecked, it's user issue and not a device issue.chefbb said:

My take on this is that I try to be as careful with my electronics as possible, and to balance this with a normal daily use. If I have an accident with something and wreck it, I figure it's my fault.

if you want a phone that can take a 10 foot drop and not break or that can go 4 ft under water, then go get one of those construction worker phones that can make calls and that's about it. if you want a really nice, top-of-the-line phone that can do email, internet, and is an iPod, then get the iPhone and don't be stupid with it. any phone that's not made to withstand falls and water is going to be fragile and delicate. you just need to be careful with it. you paid $200 for it, so take care of it
Have you read any of the water damage threads here on this forum? They are either about dropping the phone into the toilet or washing the phone with jeans.
Also if you let your phones sit in the rain for a few hours.... I'd recommend you do something about that.
And if you're super clumsy buy an Otter Box case.

I find its great so far. I have a case on it that has a lip around the front. This way if it drops face first the screen doesn't hit first. I have dropped it short distances twice. Both times I freak out then pick it up to see its fine. I understand though that if it breaks I will have to pay for another such is life. But I have found it to be pretty durable. I also think the iphone would survive rain just like you mentioned as long as its not submerged. It doesn't have a ton of entry points.
I would never get the 16. Thats just me though. Currently my 32 is almost full. I have navigon which takes over 1gb of space. Plus I have a bunch of pictures to show friends. Then I have my whole music collection as it replaces my ipod in the car, train etc. 16 would fill up far to fast for me. And for $100 why not? its a phone that needs to last you for 2-3 years. (we have 3 year contracts here)

You simply do not leave any electronic item, whether it's an iPhone, a Blackberry, a Xbox 360, or a 42" Samsung LCD television, outside in the rain ... they will all break, and there is no guarantee of durability.
I mean, if you believe there is some kind of durability expected from electronics devices being left in the rain, try this for an experiment.
Dip your hands in water, then turn on a mains socket.
Same result ... BOOM.

I have a two year old first generation iPhone. I carry it in my pocket, in an old iPod case (I could never decide on a good dedicated case for it). It has no scratches or cracks on the screen, a few minor scratches on the back, and I still get 10 hours audio playback on it.
I've dropped it twice from hip height onto a road surface (the source of most of the scratches on the back) while getting out of the car.
Like any piece of electronic equipment, it can break under the right (ie wrong) circumstances. It might survive several 12 foot drops onto concrete, but a 3 foot drop onto a hardwood floor could crack the screen if it lands on the corner.

iPhone 3gs + Otterbox Defender Case = Durability issue solved (including water splash/rain)
It's what I had to get to give me peace of mind..... such a great phone but the environment i work & play in can be dusty/dirty/wet. So I paid $35 for the case and never felt better! When I take it out of the case once a week the phone looks like the day I bought it.
