iPhone email and .mac email is poorly integrated

I wish my .mac account is more tightly integrated with my iPhone.

Here are a couple of things....

1) A sent email shows up in sent mailbox on the iPhone AND the desktop/web version.
2) Emails either replied to or forward to or are unread, show up consistently on both the iPhone AND the desktop/web version.

try changing preferences

Have you set your mail preferences to delete sent messages from server?

If messages are on the server, they SHOULD show up on any and all devices. The default is to save sent messages on server.

Until you delete received messages from server (deleting or moving to mailbox on computer), they'll show up everywhere.

You can change the mail preferences (preferences - accounts - mailbox behaviors) to not store sent messages on server at all, to delete after one day, week, month, or delete when quitting mail.

I personally don't like deleting anything automatically, so I have another "sent" folder on my computer and move messages off server into that folder and can then deal with deleting later.

Like idontjoinforums mentioned, your .Mac email is stored on a central server, so no matter what method you use to access it (iPhone, web client, desktop), the folders should have the same email in them.

i.e. if you send something from your iPhone, the iPhone puts a copy in the Sent folder on the server. So when you use the web or desktop to view the Sent folder on the server, it's going to show you anything the iPhone put there.

Thats the point of IMAP email.

With Gmail, its only POP, so you effectively have to 'read' each email on as many machines as you access it (web, iPhone, Mail.app etc) It drives me nuts.

Same here. I just have gmail forward everything to my .Mac account, which is the only way I know of making it manageable.

No, that's WELL integrated. That's the way it should be. That's the holy grail of email configuration. That's why we GMail users desperately wish that Google would implement IMAP for GMail access, instead of just POP.
