Iphone Email ?

Any idea about the mail thing
i configure my mail accounts ( two accounts ) in my Iphone, but i am afraid to use EDGE because it might be costly
did it compress it or just download the mail with the it full size?
for example ( in some other handset like blackberry ) they compress the email so you can use it even gprs with low charges since the size of the email is compress .
so my question again is Iphone do the same thing ( compress ) or not ?
please advice

edge is free if you've got the o2 or atat contract..... well fair use policy and all that

but in fact i am using the Iphone in the Gulf ( Qatar )
and in our network provider the EDGE is not for free, so base on that my question appear ?

the use of edge outside your network in the Middle East will be be very expensive.
