Hi all,
I have an old iphone 5 that I am trying to wipe and restore to be used as a music player/camera. I go into iTunes (12.9.5.5) on my imac running Mojave (10.14.6). I click on Restore, it downloads the software and installs.

After the restore, my iphone 5 then goes to the "Hello" screen. I can put in my wifi network, but then it asks me to login to iCloud. I put in my credentials, but it says "could not sign in" "error connecting to icloud" and I cannot seem to get past this screen. I am certain I am putting in the correct credentials.

I tried putting the iphone into recovery mode and restoring that way through iTunes, but I keep running up against the "could not sign in" "error connecting to icloud" problem.
I tried telling it to restore from an old backup, and tried again telling it to set the iphone up as a new iphone. Still no luck getting past the "could not sign in" "error connecting to icloud" problem.

Does anyone out there have another suggestion?
Thanks so much for your help.
Bill

An iPhone doesn’t HAVE to log into iCloud when it’s being set up as new.
Get the phone set up as usable without logging in - then deal with iCloud and your Apple ID later.

That's what I have experienced before this. But now, as I said, after the restore, it asks for my Wifi info, and then goes directly to ask for me to login to Apple/iCloud. I cannot find a way to bypass that.

iphone error connecting to icloud after restore solution

Well-chalk this up to user error, or something like that. I couldn't find a way around it asking for my apple ID/iCloud info, but then I finally clicked on "Don't have an Apple ID or forgot it?". That then let me choose set up later.....
Thanks for your help.

I am having this exact same problem with an iphone 5c. It seems to have just started yesterday or today. I have tried signing out and resetting apple id password. tried different ids and passwords. all ids and passwords are good as they can be used on the websites and an iphone SE 2020 model. I am wondering if the 5c is starting to go out of support in some fashion.

I would just like to add that even though I can now get past the iCloud login and use the iPhone 5, I still cannot login to Apple/iCloud. I continue to get the "could not sign in" "error connecting to icloud" problem.
As amigobuddy mentioned, it could be due to the fact that it is an iPhone 5, and may have something to do with how old the technology is.....

I was able to sign into itunes on the 5c with id/password. I am still however unable to sign into icloud (facetime - individually, etc.) via the phone. The password/id is able to sign into icloud from the browser.
