iPhone EURO or iPhone v2 ?

with iPhone coming to europe soon, do you think it will be updated alltogether, or we'll see a separate version for europe?

i'm saying this because edge doesn't really work here, so they'll have to go 3g to get almost anyone to buy the device...

a tech store had one on demo here in athens and i must say that it is ace, couldn't get my hands off it, plus it was kind of funny that practically no one else in the store knew how to operate it (i've watched most of the videos on it).

i think that it will indeed be cheaper than any of its competitors (ie sony ericsson p990 and the likes) but an absence of 3g will be a let down, especially for the target group of these devices...

what do you think?

Hopefully they'll put a 3G chip when they bring it to Europe. When you played with it in Athens did it have internet acess besides the Wifi on it?
I hope it dont use OTENET

A lot of people are making an issue about it not using 3G and definately that is a downside but get this I use GPRS to browse on my phone and its bearable.

If they manage to get EDGE up for it in Europe I dont think it will be as bad as people make out.

I wish people would start taking into account the whole user experience that the iPhone encompasses which it has got great reviews for and stop making an issue of this 3G vs EDGE.

Everyone would love 3G on their iPhone thats a gimme but wouldnt all us euro folk love more an announcement the date that the iPhone is going to be available and from who because I would near enough bet my bottom dollar (pound actually but sounds rubbish) that anyone who gets it will forget all about its network data speed once they actually get using it in real life and not just sitting there webpage after webpage complaining that they are not downloading fast enought!!

Bring on the Euro iPhone!!!

just curious how visual voicemail will work in Europe. Is that something that each provider can implement fairly easily or is it more of an AT&T proprietary thing only. If it's something providers can implement then won't we see Sprint and the like adopting this feature in upcoming devices in the U.S. soon?

To be quite frank, I am very happy with the iPhone's internet speed, even without 3G. BBC news loads in 10-15 seconds, which is quick enough for me, and we don't have the hit on the battery.

I've owned two other 3G phones, the Motorola Q, and a HTC 6700 with verizon, and I didn't use the internet half as much on those, due to the interface.

But don't get me wrong, 3G will be a welcome addition, I'm just not going to get bent out of shape that the iPhone doesn't have it.

i think it's a lot easier for apple to put 3g in the iPhone than all the comms companies in europe changing their entire infrastructure to accomodate edge.

having a phone that costs all that money means that you want to actually use it and browsing using gprs really does suck as$!!!
imagine using a full browser like the safari on the iphone!!!

as far as visual voicemail goes, i don't think it will be implemented at all over here...

I don't know how fast 3G is, but I live in Chicago and edge is pretty fast here. Webpages load in 10 secs if not sooner. I cannot imagine ever using another phone again, I don't care of I have to wait a bit for a webpage to load, the iPhone is worth every second!!!!

It shouldnt be that hard for cellphone companys to implement the visual voicemail.
It just turns the voicemail message into an audio file and sends it to your phone.

From what I have read- Europe will have the same iPhone as in the US. Version 1. Edge(2G) will work anywhere 3G works. If you don't believe me, seach on this Forum about roaming in other countries.

So you will be getting the iPhone World Phone... the same as everyone else gets.

No we won't. Don't get me wrong I love apple stuff and will pick up an iphone before Christmas but..... to be honest you guys in America are really far behind Europe when it comes to mobile phone technology.

In Ireland there are only 3G phones and we have had them for years at this stage any 2G phones are less than €40 with €80 call credit.

Version 1. Edge(2G) will work anywhere 3G works.

We have 3G infrastructure here and nothing else will cut it. Having a phone that works may cut it in the states but is not good enough when paying €500 to €600 for it here. It would want to work really bloody well and be 3G capable.

If a 2G iphone is released in Europe exactly the same as the States only the true Apple enthusiasts (which are fewer than in the States) will buy it and they will effectively cut their sales by roughly 75%. And Apple can forget about releasing it on a bill pay scheme as very few except business users have bill schemes in Ireland and business won’t be shelling out hundreds for their company members to use iphones.

Sim Free (Pay as you go) phones are what sell here and Irish people won’t pay €30- €40 a month for a personal bill account just for an iphone, and this is leaving aside the downgrade in technology from what we already have.

For example even the cheapest 2G phones have a 2 M.P camera.
And the best phone apparently in the world has the same? What’s the story with that?
The phone I had in January 2006 had a 3 M.P camera.

Moral of the story is that if Apple make the mistake of doing any of the following:

A) Not releasing a 3G model for Europe
B) Making it bill or contract only
C) Not doing a large upgrade on it before it’s released here
D) Overpricing the Sim Free version.

It will die a death in Ireland if they do any of those, leaving aside Europe.

I really hope they do the right thing, for their sake

i agree to some degree.. not releasing a 3G phone will also allow competitors to advance ahead to those not willing to accept/buy a 2G iPhone.

My contract comes to end in early December, so I'll be looking round for the best deals then, but if the iPhone were 3G, then it's a no brainer for me.. even willing to switch networks (to O2 i assume).

They really should be announcing iPhone EU details as it's not long to go before years end!

Lets hope Paris Expo brings some pleasant surprises

The Europe phone market is a hell of a lot different to the US, People expect cheap/free phones when they get locked into a contract and if Apple charge what they do in The States Its going to fail in Europe and if it doesnt have 3g its just going to fail even more.

The lack of 3G makes the device a no-no for me. This isnt just a mobile phone it's a mobile data device. The main features are very data-centric (email, Safari, AJAX-based apps). To not have 3G (and HSDPA at that) on such a device is commercial suicide over here where there isn't a preponderance of publicly open municipal wifi networks.

Only the fashion-phone people will pick it up here with US-specs.

However, I might be completely wrong so I guess we'll see.
