I've received an e-mail saying I have to hand over my broken iPhone to the UPS person tomorrow before he can give me my replacement phone.

Has anyone been through this before?

I've also just talked to an Apple rep and they say I should delete this e-mail and follow the instructions that come with the replacement phone.

Who is right?

usually the device will come with a prepaid label that you slap on the box and hand it over at your nearest ups drop off to send back your old phone

it is highly unusual that the ups guy will ask you for old iPhone on the spot

make sure you erase the iPhone , turn off find my iPhone and remove it from iCloud before you actually ship it back. sending back a damaged phone that is still connected to your iCloud account can result your credit card being charged.
some warranty companies will actually charge you $500 for returning a damaged phone with find my iPhone still enabled.

you can do this on www.cloud.com on any web browser.
http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2702
follow the directions in :
Remove an iOS device you no longer have

the directions will also probably say to remove the sim card from the damaged phone and insert it into the new phone

hopefully you backed up your iPhone recently

Well turns out, I opened the door, and he knew it was a phone replacement. So he pretty much opened the package, handed me my replacement, and then put my current phone into the box and prepaid packet.

I'm not worried tbh. He;s under instructions to not hand me the device without my returning it. So me having the device, proves it gave it over to him.
