Hello, i have iPhone 6 (16gb) running iOS 10.3.1. Facing some performance issues and also a few other issues like step count is not accurate.

I am planning to erase all contents and settings and setup my iPhone from scratch again.

Need advise on-
1) Does factory resetting the iPhone help improve performance?
2) If i use the same apple id again after factory resetting, will it restore all my synced things or does it ask what to be synced? I would like to get the contacts back again and OK to reinstall the apps and do all the settings myself again.

Factory reset (restoring as new) can potentially increase performance as it is deletes old files that could be slowing down the phone. Its best to do it via iTunes and restore so it installs a new copy of iOS. When you do Reset all settings and content, its not actually reinstalling the OS, so if there was a corruption in the OS, it won't be fixed.

If you sign back into iCloud, you should get your bookmarks, notes, calendar events, contacts and so on. But any other data will be lost because you are not restoring from a backup. Such as app data, messages, health and so on. if you were to restore from a backup, chances are the sluggishness wouldn't be fixed.

Thanks, thats helpful. Could you explain more on -
"Its best to do it via iTunes and restore so it installs a new copy of iOS"
That's exactly what i am looking for - reinstall iOS and then set up (not restore from a backup) as a new device. I am ok to lose messages, health data etc as long as getting the contacts etc back.

When you go to reset all settings and content on the device itself, all it does is set it back to factory. When you do a restore through iTunes it's actually reinstalling the OS itself. Completely rewrites it. Therefore if there was an OS corruption issue, it will be resolved.

Plug into iTunes. Turn off Find My iPhone and click restore. It will download and install the OS. Then you can set it up as new. Upon logging into iCloud your contacts should restore.

Perfect thanks. I thought Restore via iTunes meant to restore the phone to an earlier backup. But if it just installs the iOS again and not restoring anything, I will be good.

When you restore, it asks if you want to set up as new or from a backup. So just select new and you are good to go!
