iphone formatting question

i was wondering if the iphone formats the same way as an ipod, like when i have my ipod hooked up to my pc it says windows and some numbers after it, and then my friends ipod says mac and some numbers after it, since they are formatted for the specific operating system,

is it hard, or is it possible to have an iphone on a pc, then when i get my mac in a few months (christmas) switch all my stuff over to that?
