Kudos to them! Sounds promising. Hopefully they're right and the method they discovered can be replicated in software, and will be simpler than the TurboSIM method. Also hopefully it can withstand iPhone updates. ;)

thats great and all but still a lack of visual voicemail :(

That is my opinion is a small price to pay considering the fact that you can't even make a call on the iPhone if your provider is something other then AT&T. Of course turbo sim can do that for you as well but it's expensive, and no visual voicemail there either. That would all depend on your carrier.

Visual voicemail is just not coming. It uses server-side technology that only AT&T has deployed, AFAIK. At best perhaps some third party web-based solution that works more or less like visual voicemail. It's a nice feature, but you have to decide if it's a dealbreaker for you, I guess....

And why did visual voicemail have to be "on the server side"? Would it have been so difficult to create some sort of voice mail push system that would just save the message on the phone itself?

I'm actually curious because it seems that I heard that a few other smart phones have this ability but not sure.

I can't wait, I am hoping for a software solution also. I am currently using the iphone prepaid with ATT, because I have a family plan that is still in contract with T-Mobile. If I can get back into T-Mobile, I can take advantage of the mobile to mobile, and unlimited text messages! My whole family uses T-Mobile, and I get charged everytime I contact them.

tmobile rocks but how much do they charge for unlimited data? most likely att is a better deal since they have a special iphone price...

Man, I love visual voice mail ... I dunno if I could use a phone without it. Dead serious, its very handy and doesn't waste my time like older voicemail systems do.

Very common for me to be in a meeting and get 3 calls, not only can I listen to those messages very quickly. But, I can pick and choose which I want to listen to first. (Based on priority)

My favorite part is being able to rewind a few seconds. For example, people love to leave me a 3 minute voicemail and say their number at the end. If they say it too quick, I would have to go back and listen to the entire thing again.

I will stick with AT&T ... they are fine.

Wow thats not too bad, they got it unlocked in only one month. I thought the only way to get it to work was with the TurboSim. I would have loved to stay with Tmobile but the service in my area was really getting bad. Although getting 54 paged bills from AT&T isn't going to be fun either.

I wonder if he's able to use the Tmobile data plan for internet. Either way I guess he's got WIFI in case it doesn't work.

So the Visual voicemail wont work and obviously the Edge network wont either.
I dont know if they can get Tmobile's data plans to work with the Iphone but still very good progress.
You can always hit 1 and dial into voicemail and for data just use Wifi.

I may be a total skeptic, but i'm not convinced just because he shows you the phone screen and says "See, it says T-Mobile." You can put ANY icon you want in that spot. Further more. it's not hard to do a little slight of hand and swap sim cards... I'l believe it when I see it in person. Too many sites competing to be the first to unlock. It's almost like the moon landing. ;)

Where does it mention the Edge network not working? I know for the TurboSim method they were only able to get GPRS speeds, unless that has changed recently. Thanks.

I dont know, Im just thinking cause The Edge Network is provided by AT&T it wouldnt work with a hacked iphone using a Tmobile account/phone number.

T-Mobile also has it's own Edge network, in the TurboSim method there are instructions on where to enter the T-Mobile internet settings on the iPhone. The term "edge" is just another word for the faster GPRS (usually around 200kbps) and most carriers will have it on their network, its just a matter of settings.

Oh interesting. I didnt know that.
So they're all named Edge?

Yea actually edge is a universal term (Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution). Here is the wikipedia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enhanced_Data_Rates_for_GSM_Evolution

They have a list of GSM carriers that have the Edge Network.

Back on topic: I sure hope they are able to do a software unlock (if it's not a hoax to begin with), I don't know if the TurboSims will be readily available anytime soon!

Great news. When the software unlock comes through they'll be flying off eBay to EU customers.

this is exactly why I got my iPhone a month ago. Even though im in Canada, I still wanted to have the phone for when an unlock came out. That way I dont have to worry about getting the phone as soon as someone announces an unlock and it possibly be harder to get one then. That and I just REALLY wanted it regardless hahaha

I'd love to get one off eBay and use it on a UK network.

I can see phone calls, and probably text messages working (don't you have to enter a network-specific text message centre no. though, for outgoing texts?), but I don't think EDGE will work - for starters, it'll be GPRS in the UK. I think it's the same protocols etc., just a bit faster, but there's a lot of info to enter in order to get this to work (again, network-specific servers and usernames/passwords etc.), so I don't reckon edge and definitely not visual voicemail, will work. Numbers are also auto-formatted in US brackets, and ZIP codes instead of postcodes, etc.

Also, future Apple updates may wipe this unlock out.

So I guess my question is this:-

When the UK iPhone DOES eventually get released, will I be able to do a software restore with the UK software, and "convert" my US iPhone into a UK one?

Only if you can find the UK software for the iphone. The phone will need flashing and then total software reinstallation.
