Since GMail is POP and not IMAP when a message is downloaded to one device it will not be downloaded to another, is there any way to keep the inbox on my future iPhone synched with the inbox on my MacBook? I don't want to check my mail, get all my forum replies and get stuck checking them on the iPhone because they didn't show up on my Mac.

--Thanks for putting up with all my questions.

it seems like after mail download to iphone a copy will always be saved on the server, however you will need to check on the options under preference>account>advance in osx mail to choose to leave a copy on the server after download it to mail then you will be able to download it again on your iphone

I have been struggling with this myself on my Treo. I set it up in anticipation of the iPhone I ordered. Once I check messaged on my treo they do not download on the Mac. Conversely when I chck on the Treo - they next polling of email leaves my Treo inbox empty of everything but newly arrived messages. Could be unique to the device.... I am hoping the same will not plague m on the IPhone. The mobile Outlook does some screwy things sometime.

my mac and my iphone both check my gmail fine. are you leaving a copy of the mail on the server? this needs to be applied to the gmail settings and the settings in the mail.app on the mac.

I second that, Gmail settings let you save a copy in gmail, if a copy is saved a gmail, your mail client should have the message. I use Entourage and its been getting every email that I get to my Iphone. It does get annoying deleting things twice, but thats life.

Well, that's where IMAP comes in. :) It does kind of suck that they don't have it for gmail. Until then, I'll just use safari to check my gmail on my iphone. Sure I don't get the neato mail notification on my phone, but at least I don't have to delete/archive everything twice.

You could set up GMail to automatically forward your mail to another one of your email accounts that is IMAP compatable. Then just set your "reply to" field to be your GMail address.

I plan on buying an iphone within the next couple of weeks.

on my macbook pro, when using gmail with mail, every email i send shows up in my inbox folder (is this with everyone or just me?)

if this is a common problem with gmail and pop, will i also have this issue with the iphone?

if not, how do i fix it on my mac??

thanks

Here's the Gmail FAQ about enabling recent mode. This will let all clients download all mail, whenever and wherever it was read first...

-i've got pop, downloads to my mail program, and settup a rule that deletes messages to me...

-and i get all the mail to both my macbookpro and my iphone. works fine, only thing missing is push... right?

not quite sure why you have a rule that deletes messages to you... and regarding push, i personally don't need instant email, but i'm pretty sure the only push email on iPhone is from yahoo so for now you have to wait until the phone checks the server for mail.

the gmail rule that deletes messages from myself gets ride of every email that i send also showing up in my inbox. this is an effect of gmail's threaded emails, supposedly...

OO ok now i remember.. Actually now that i think about it i don't get those emails anymore (i use thunderbird) after i started using recent. The only thing was I started to get 2 copies of my outgoing mail (one from thunderbird, one from the gmail smtp) but i switched my smtp to my ISP's instead of gmail and that fixed that problem...

hey, thanks for the tips

it's not that i can't get os x mail to work, it does, i'm just annoyed that everything i send pops up in my inbox folder... so the only way to fix this is to set up a rule that deletes all messages from me?

also, i still don't know whether or not this is an issue with the iphone - for those that have it, do the emails you send with gmail pop up in your inbox or no?

in os x mail, make sure to modify the rule so that messages from you that contain the word "alarm" in the subject do not get deleted. This way, if you set email notifications of events in iCal (or suspect that you may one day do so), they'll get through.

it does when you use the built in gmail account wizzard, just use the "other" setting to setup gmail......problem solved

guys, I really appreciate your help, BUT

I just set up a rule to delete all mail coming from me, but low and behold, it doesn't work.

The rule clearly states:

If all of the following conditions are met: From - is equal to - *********@gmail.com - Perform the following actions: Move message to - Trash

I've changed it from all to any, tried my email both lower case and upper case, changed my email to just my name (which is the way it shows up in my inbox) changed to from move message to delete message - None of it does anything! PFT!

edit - the first time i figured OK, it's not gonna work on email already in my inbox, but at least it'll stop now. Nope, still every time I send an email with the rule ON, still doesn't work

thanks for that tip! It stopped emails sent from my iPhone from showing up again in my iPhone inbox. But, emails sent from the gmail web interface do still show up in my iPhone inbox. I guess that's not all bad though - then I can move em to my iphone sent box and keep a copy.

Also - since I set my MacBook's mail to recent mode, emails I download to the MacBook disappear from the web interface even though I have gmail set to archive when a pop device accesses a message. Any thoughts on why? TIA!

Omg, this whole process seems so confusing >.<

If anyone can give me some advise as to my mail situation, that would be awesome!

Gmail's web interface (Gmail.Com) is my main client. I star, delete, keep mail I want all in there.

I also use OSX's Mail.App to POP from Gmail to keep a hard copy on my hard drive. But depending when I open Mail.App, I may get email that I want and don't want. But that's ok.

My question is, is there a way for me to mirror what I have in my Gmail to my iPhone w/o having to do any extra work?
