Hi

I've just updated my firmware to 2.2 following a restore. My iPhone is jailbroken.

My Gmail was set up to Push, I know it wasn't proper push but it was activated in settings and any time i picked up my phone to use it, it would alert me to new messages. This isn't the case anymore. The push option is no longer there in settings and it's set to fetch new emails every 15 minutes (though debatable)

Any idea how I get get the push option back, even if it isn't proper push?

Didn't know it was an option with gmail. I have push on .mac and fetch on gmail.

You sure you're not mistaken?

Gmail never pushed, only fetched. True, you could set the generic global setting to "push", but in the Gmail specific section, you only ever could fetch at different time intervals.

actually push did work for gmail on the iphone. it says fetch but if you had push on, for some reason it worked. A bunch of users here on the forum had another thread about it. i didn't believe it till i tried it. i haven't tested it in 2.2 though so sux it's gone. i just wished apple/gmail would just add it in officially for us :(

are you sure people weren't just using imap with a super aggressive refresh time. I don't think gmail does push.

Gmail doesn't support push. Probably was just a coincidence with the fetch timer. Hopefully they will support push soon.

that push button acted as a placebo pill for you guys i think. It is well known and documented that Gmail does not do push on the iphone.

Sorry but I am 100% sure that in the Advanced section>Gmail there was an option of Push, Fetch & Manual. I know it for a fact as I thought it was pretty strange myself but if was there.

I take it no one knows how to rectify this....

no i'm 100% sure gmail push WAS working and was NOT a placebo. like i said i didn't believe it either. so i did a test. fastest fetch timer you can set is 15min. i send e-mails to my gmail account every 1min. i got them on the phone 30sec-1min later. i did this repeatedly and randomly and it ALWAYS worked. i'll find the thread for you.

fetch and push are 2 different things. fetch goes out and polls your gmail account every few minutes and fetches whatever is there. push instantly routes emails to your phone as soon as they hit your gmail. there are times when i think i have push also because its almost instant but im sure its a coincidence.

Well, Gmail's IMAP does support the IDLE command which is a pseudo push..
maybe someone managed to implement that in jailbroken iphones?

i've never seen gmail actually have the option for push. but it pushed as long as i had it on (pre 2.2). just tried sending an e-mail and it's definitely not pushing anymore :(

Push for Gmail was a bug.

It's just the phone constantly checking for email. They fixed that with 2.2. Something about a bug in the IDLE thing, or what have you.
