Some details about the iPhone hardware are now trickling out.

The CPU used incorporates an ARM1176JZF CPU running at 620MHz:

Power consumption: 0.280W at full speed, with aggressive power saving features via "Intelligent Energy Manager" that can save 25% - 50% of the power. i.e., it is possible that in certain modes of operation the CPU is only using 0.140W.
I bet that the extended iPhone battery life since the initial reports was partially due to implementation of IEM.
It's a shame that there is no Java support on the iPhone, given that the CPU supports Java, and that so many mobile applications are written in it.
It appears that the CPU is fabbed by Samsung as part of a SOC (System On Chip) that incorporates hardware to aid with media playback (H.264, etc) and probably a decent mobile graphics core for the interface effects (although the ARM CPU also has vector floating point that is meant to aid in this task). 128MB of RAM is also included within the package.
