Hello.

I've noticed today that the name for my iPhone has changed from either iPhone 13 or just iPhone (I forgot), to iPhone (3) - this is what my earphones announce when I connect them to the phone, and also when I got to Settings > Apple ID and it lists my devices. The iPhone is listed as iPhone (3).

I've gone to Settings > General > About and changed the name, and it's updated there successfully, but when I go to the Apple ID section, it still shows as iPhone (3) and it also shows that on the web, Apple ID site > devices.

Any idea what might have cause this random change and how I can fix it?

now i see it

Ive seen that before on my iPhone 8. iOS 14. I think it happened after an update.
I changed it back and eventually everything synced.

The default name of your iPhone is something like “John’s iPhone”. Reset Network Settings will change it to “iPhone”. I’ve never seen an iOS update change my phone’s name, but I suppose that doesn’t mean it couldn’t happen. Do/did you happen to have an “iPhone” and “iPhone (2)” already listed in the devices for your Apple ID? That might have made it append the number to it.

To get the new name synced to your account, try restarting your phone. Be sure to tap the “iPhone Findable After Power Off” text and temporarily turn off finding. (It’ll turn back on automatically after it reboots.) That worked for me when I renamed my iPhone awhile back. Restarting normally didn’t do anything until I did that...unless it was just a coincidence.

Thanks for responding. There are no other iPhones listed, but this is the third iPhone I have that’s used iCloud. Previously had a 6 and 11 but those were factory reset each time I upgraded. They no longer show up on my list of iCloud devices.

The good thing is, the naming issue seems to have resolved itself overnight, hooray!
