Was planning on switching and picking up an iPhone this week but was wondering about the 3G quality in the Boston area. Anyone here have any recent experience or issues?

I live in Boston and for the most part coverage is good. There are some places that will have dead spots. I would say go for it also, I am happy with the coverage.

I live near Boston and work in Boston. I am very happy with the 3G coverage, I found no difference in coverage between verizon and att. Signal strength was identical. The iPhone works great, and the I've not had any problems with 3G

I recently switched from verizon to at&t and also use nextel for work.
at&t 's coverage is so equal to verizon's and both are better than nextel

No problems for me with iphone all around 128 & towards town and even in sourthern maine. I wouldn't let at&t rumurs stop ya.

oh and everyone told me at&t coverage was not good, not 1 dropped call to date

I also live near and work in Boston. Signal strength is as good as Verizon (I used to have vzn and my gf still does). 3G speeds get kinda slow at times when a lot of people are on, but there's 3G everywhere and it's never unbearably slow, just sub-optimal. I would (and have) whole-heartedly recommend the iphone and AT&T in Boston.

I live in the Boston are and 3G coverage is very good to excellent. I've only experienced a few dead spots in the suburbs (north shore when visiting friends) but coverage in the city itself is great. I was in LA a couple of months ago and 3G coverage there is crap by comparison - it made me really appreciate the coverage in Boston. :p

I've found it depends on the area and time of day- for data that is. For example, at noontime near Fenway, it's not unusual for the speed to drop to what you would expect from Edge. Overall though, I'm not terribly disappointed with capacity in the Boston area. And coverage is great IMHO.

Thanks for all the responses. We're picking them up tomorrow. I'll try and follow-up with my thoughts on the service in the area.

At one time I used to get 2 to 3 bars at work the best. Now I'm hitting 5 bars easily. Service is great in the Boston area.

Boston area is very good.
The red/green/orange have about 20% coverage at certain stations.

All most all locations inside the 495 loop is 3G, 24is 3G, 128 3G, the Pike is 3G out to about 5 miles after the Auburn interchange. 190 is 3G to exit 5 (Wachusett Mountain).
Cape good 3G down to the rotaries.

Of course Nashua and Glouster are 3G.

Once you get past Worcester/Auburn 3G is on and off til you hit just outside of Springfield. On the Western side of Springfield 3G coverage drops off.

Look at Squaretrade for the warranties.
My friend has it and he has had great service with them.

A little late, but I'll echo that 3G service is very good on Boston and Cambridge. Almost always at full bars. I've had a few dropped calls in Somerville (near Davis Sq), but never in downtown Boston or in Central/Harvard Sq.
