I live in the USA, we bought an iPhone through ebay which was registered in Canada. Long story short, it wasn't working even with the little unlocking SIM card thing! SO...I tool it to an apple retail store the guy there did a reset which blanked out the whole thing and we are unable to put the firmware back on the phone. Can you tell me what I should do? From what i understand I need to download custom firmware for this phone, but iTunes isn't recognizing it and I don't know how to get into the iPhone to follow Direction? I am a NOVICE!!!

Did you try to take out the SIM adaptor and then putting a AT&T/ROGERS SIM in there? and also, try re-setting the phone. does iTunes see it w/ the SIM adapter at all?

What you should do (assuming any unlocking you did didn't damage the phone) is DFU. Hold the home and top button until you see a restore logo on the front. (Probably about 20-30 seconds)

Then plug into iTunes and do a full restore with 2.1 firmware.

good luck!

Easiest way to get it restored is like said above,

Plug in USB cord to phone, hold home key and continue to hold during the remaining steps. Plug in the USB to the computer, and wait for a arrow and a itunes logo to appear on screen, then itunes will say "you must restore before using with itunes", it autoselects/downloads latest firmware and you are all set.

A genius couldn't figure this out? Seriously?

It seems like there is information missing from this story.
