I'm connected to a wifi network. I had to unlock/jailbreak it so I can use my gophone sim card with it. Now it's randomly charging me 8 or so cents, there is no new text or anything and I'm pretty sure I didn't call anyone in my sleep. I just got this iPhone from my friend last night and I'm using my own at&t sim.I don't have unlimited data yet, but I have free txting. Does anyone know what is going on?

I'd prefer not to call customer support because I had to go to illegal means to unlock the phone. Thank you.

You want to download BossPrefs in Cydia and turn off edge. Some app is probably using a little data in the background.

Thanks for the help. I'm not 100% certain, but it might have been from the fetch new mail thing. It's my understtanding wifi turns off during standby to save battery life, so edge could have downloaded it? So I'll keep edge turned on until it happens again.

  • Unlocking is not illegal
  • 'iPhone' does not charge you a thing, your service provider charges you
  • Small charges like that sound just like data usage
  • Avoid this by disabling data by downloading BossPrefs (as per above) or by entering random characters into the EDGE settings fields, or both

I think you hit the nail on the head. WiFi is powered down when the unit is in standby, thus using cellular. If you don't have a data plan, that's what it's charging you when email is polled/fetched. :)
