If you buy the phone outright in Canada, the phone is unlocked and remains unlocked, so you can change providers any time you wish.

( previously, the BS was that you purchased the phone outright and the phone is still locked to one carrier )

I'm worried that when you finally get AT&T to give in and give you a microsim card they'll make you sign a two year saying you're bringing a new device on or something. People upgrading from an iPhone really shouldn't have to change a thing except get & AT&T microsim & then connect to iTunes... But I'm sure they'll try to screw us over somehow...

I really don't think they can force us to do a 2 year contract when we are asking for no commitment.
