I went to the Att store a couple of days before the ipad was released because my iphone was messing up and i needed a new sim card. While we were changing sim cards i asked what he thought of Att losing exclusivity of the iPhone to Verizon. He told me a number of things, by the way this was a manager, number 1 Att has a 5 year contract with Apple so he doesnt understand why so many people were thinking Apple was going to switch to verizon. 2nd thing is even though verizon has more 3G coverage their speed is slow and laggy. So the verizon network would never be able to handle iphones on its network. the 3rd thing he said was in order to be a phone on verizon it has to be (i forget what he called it) but it could be used anywhere. Pretty much Apple is probably going to stay with Att because it is the fastest network. Even though that sucks id rather have good limited 3G than crappy slow 3G. Please leave your thoughts and comments

i was smoking this killer joint last night and I had this vision: Steve Jobsy came up to me and said: thep33t, build the Verizon iPhone, and they will come...
So I have it on good authority it will actually be on the verizon network soon.

Although I have voiced my opinion before that Apple won't dump AT&T, those are not the reasons.
1. No one, I mean no one (outside high execs which ain't talking) knows when the AT&T-Apple agreement ends or how long it is. Least of all a Store manager.
2. AT&T simply will out bid anyone. Like they did for the iPad.

I wouldn't believe everything you hearVerizon doesn't have a slow and laggy 3g network. Their network would handle the device just fine as it does their other 3g smartphones.
Agreed... The manager was just tooting his own AT&T horn on the speed. I know what the tests show comparing the two companies 3G speeds and admit that there is some difference. However, now that I've been with both companies, the speed difference seems to be negligible.
Also, contracts mean nothing anymore between businesses. If they wanted to, Apple could buy out of any remaining contract and jump ship to open the iPhone up to any carrier they want. That being said though, I don't see a Verizon iPhone popping up this year. They'd have to redevelop the phone for CDMA and considering Verizon is prepping for LTE, I just don't see Apple dumping money into a technology that's going to die off. Honestly, I think we'd sooner see iPhone on T-Mobile considering they're GSM.
Agreed the LTE jump makes most sense. I have verizon and a droid and the speeds were very comparable to my 3gs.

What a store employee or manager told you means nothing. They wont/dont know any more details than anyone else.
The problem with this idea (i.e. LTE) is that the phone would still need to be BACKWARDS compatible.
So, this would STILL mean that there would need to be a CDMA iPhone.
That being said, iPhone coming to VZW is an eventuality. Maybe not this year or even next year, but eventually it'll be on VZW (and other networks).
Why? Because Apple is in the business of selling HARDWARE. Also, look at other countries, Apple is moving towards being on as many networks as possible.

Yes, and all those are international GSM carriers.
Apple doesn't have to do anything to the phone besides sign a contract with the new iPhone partner networks.
Again, you forget that the largest carrier in the United States is Verizon Wireless.
Additionally, before you mention that iPhone is an international phone (which it is), remember that well over the MAJORITY of iPhone sales are from the U.S. alone.
Finally, why such animosity towards VZW? Is it really b/c of those Droid ads? Really?

Apple doesn't seem to care one bit if verizon is the largest us carrier.
They are in the international market where GSM is the standard in over 80% of the world.
It's not animasity but realism.
People have been missing out for over 3 years on using an iPhone, to sit there and hope and wait another 3 is pointless IMO.
Let's face it, it's not happening any time soon.
Available options are AT&T or unlocked on Tmobile.
If Apple didn't care about being w/ VZW, why even talk to them? Only using VZW as ammunition against AT&T is again, short-sighted. I guarantee you that Apple is planning on eventually being on VZW.
Doesn't matter if GSM is 80% of the world. Additionally, qualcomm and others are coming out with dual GSM/CDMA chips. Why wouldn't Apple eventually use those as well?
There's definitely animosity towards anything that is not Apple connected. You may not have it, but read the tone on this topic thread itself. Also, if you don't live in NYC, SF, you probably don't realize how ridiculously crappy AT&T is in those cities. If you think that Apple doesn't care about this either, then I don't know what to say.
I'm not saying that it's happening this year or next, all I'm claiming that it's an EVENTUALITY.

I hear you. I am lucky enough not to live near those 2 problem areas but just like me and you also AT&T knows about it and will most likelly try to correct it.
Apple went to Verizon first over 4-5 years ago, now they just giving them the cold shoulder.
If eventuality means in another 2-3 years away it's a lost cause.
Most likelly verizon will be stringing along their customers and telling them they're getting the iPhone soon just like they were doing for
over 3 years now. While in the meantime locking them down to more expensive contracts.

I don't think of it as a nonsense thread. I found it interesting to hear what this manager said--and I'm sure he was sincere and believes everything he said. But of course, what others have said is certainly true--in the business world, money talks--and exclusivity often walks.
It's widely assumed that ATT's exclusivity contract runs through at least this summer.
We don't know if the contract included other devices. And we don't know if it forbids even talking to (or about) any other carrier in advance of its end.
So we shouldn't automatically expect Apple to approach other carriers yet on the iPad, or talk about any other carrier's phone.
I would say that they just don't know anything and just make stuff up so they sound important.

Ok let me telll you what the pizza delivery man told me about iphone on verizon becuase his brother works at verizon and he told him that Verizon is defintely getting the iphone.
Also I was in a Verizon store the other day getting service on my company owned BB and the head tech told me that the iphone will be on Verizon by July. He had a Employee of the Month on his badge so I take him to be credible. Hope this helps.
