I tried to search for the answer and did not find one so I am posting a thread.

I currently live in Japan and am planning to buy a locked US phone. I was wondering, do I need to have service inorder to jailbreak/unlock the phone? Or is it ok to do it without the current carrier's service? Thank you in advance.

To jailbreak you dont need service, just a computer with an internet connection. But to unlock you need cydia and for that you need service but what you could do is just find a wi-fi hotspot and just quickly download ultrasn0w through cydia.:)
