I was a former Cingular manager and a former employee of mine still works for Cingular/AT&T. He confirmed last night that the launch date set internally is June 11.

Thats not too far off :D

Can't wait!

I sure hope this is true.

Any word on when we might start seeing iPhone displays? Maybe before they actually go on sale? Id sure love too see how they are planning on setting up a demo.

This of course assumes your source is credible. Being a wishfull thinker, I belive it.

He is definitely credible, but you never know what can change. He never mentioned a release date before so they must have released an internal memo yesterday.

I'll double check how he got this info :)

Well, June 11 is the day of the WWDC keynote, so that might be where it's coming from.

It's possible they'll show the device in full and start taking orders on the 11th, with the device shipping later in the month.

That sounds like the most reasonable thing to me. I would think that if it is launching in June that by the 11th it would have to be close to full production, or at least at a point where they have the final product. Unless they schedule a specific conference just for the iPhone (which I doubt, since they have already detailed what appears to be most of the features) then I think some kind of announcement at WWDC is likely

All I know is he told me to be at the store early on June 11th to get mine...better be right! ;)

There is no way the stores will start selling BEFORE Jobs speaks at WWDC on June 11. His keynote is scheduled for 9 AM Pacific time. Therefore, even if he did announce release or order-taking etc., the earliest you would need to be at the store would be 9:30 Pacific time. Which is 11:30 AM in Texas, right?

Doubt the *launch* will be on June 11, but Jobs will either announce when they will be taking orders or the launch date for sure.

All due respect, your friend doesn't know anything more than we do. AT&T employees have been given some rough dates and directions, but it's either a) really vague, or b) something we already know.

Apple store managers don't know much more either. The potential for leaks is such that Apple won't be telling anyone anything they don't absolutely have to know until they absolutely have to know it.

This makes sense to me. Maybe it will be June 15th afterall.

Perhaps not so much:
Manufacturing Glitch Slows iPhone Production.
We expect sell-outs and complaints about lack of availability of the phone. On this point, we have stumbled across some info that leads us to beleive that HonHai is having trouble manufacturing to schedule and is running behind due to some part delays. It appears that the initial 12 million unit run rate will not be available by June 15. Get your iPhone if you can…

I hadn't even thought of calling to get on a waiting list. I'm #96 at my local store so I figure it's going to be a while. But now that I have some security of place I'm not quite so anxious about the wait.

I just called my AT&T store to be "put on the list" and the manager said that they are not allowed to take any names for pre-order or waiting lists for iPhone. "You'll have to come in the store when it's announced."

This is in line with AT&T and Apple's comments previously. I wonder what the deal is with the stores that are supposedly taking names.

I didn't read the "waiting list" article, but I'm wondering: maybe the official AT&T stores do not have waiting lists, but the authorized resellers do?

I specifically called an AT&T store, not an authorized retailer or a kiosk.

Authorized resellers won't sell iPhone at launch at all, according to AT&T. Only AT&T stores, Apple stores, and the two companies' websites.

Apple is going to want to have a huge event for this with fireworks and girls jumping out of cakes. They wont just release it to the stores overnight.

Or both...events with cake and women, then Job saying "In stores today!"

Also lots of iPhone talk has been done...we know stuff about the iPhone already

i could see jobs saying that they are available today during the keynote. i doubt apple throws a big even. they havent done that since 2003 when they launched the G5 and had the instore apple parties. they didnt have an event for the intel macs, tiger, etc... so i dont see one for the iphone. "tech" parties were a 1990s thing anyway, when everything was new and exciting. i bet they will be available right after the keynote around 12 noon on the east coast.

Just for the heck of it, I called an AT&T store near me.
I asked if there was a waiting list and he said no.

I then asked if there was a release date yet, and he said yes, June 15th.

I won't bank on this, but I was still surprised he did provide a date.

so what you told us is different date, huh? but I don't believe the date of launch will be during WWDC 2007 (6/11 ~ 6/15). it will be after it or the end of June (6/29).

If they DO release on June 11th, I'll be ready with my MacRumorsLive page up and will pop in the car as soon as they say available today so I can get in line outside the store. (I doubt there are very many people tuned into MRLive in my area. :D )

i can maybe see launching it on the 11th but then it will take another 2 weeks to ship so you probably wouldnt end up with one untill late june as planned. i think all the details of its plan and official release date will be announced

It was recently on a taken-down Apple Hot News section that the iPhone would be out 'late June' when mentioning that it had already won a design award :)

i don't see this happening. I'm sure apple/Cingular/At&t are going to turn this into a media frenzy. I think it will be a special event. Everyone will be pissing and moaning about it on the 11th but the follow week they will send out invitations for a special release.
