In preparation of sending my recently purchased iPhone back to the seller due to a hardware issue, I turned off Find My iPhone and logged out of iCloud before erasing all data. However, after the erasure finished and the phone rebooted, it now displays a screen saying "iPhone locked to owner. The location of this iPhone can be seen by its owner (my email address)".

I logged into iCloud on my computer and confirmed that the phone is no longer listed in Find My. Moreover, I received a confirmation email from Apple saying: "your Apple ID and password will no longer be required for someone to erase, reactivate, and use your iPhone."

Anyone know a way around this error?

I work for an AASP, these are pretty much your only options.

1) Go to https://www.icloud.com/find and make sure it doesn't appear in the devices list

2) Provide your proof of purchase to Apple Support, and they'll unlock it in a few days.

OK, thanks for that. I was planning on calling Apple anyway to discuss the phone.

I double checked iCloud again and indeed it no longer appears there.
