The rules say that the iPhone will only back up to iCloud when it is connected to wifi, connected to charge, and locked.
So why is my iPhone constantly trying to backup? Every few minutes I get a message that it can't back up because there is not enough room on iCloud.
Why is it doing this, and how can I stop it? I only want it to backup at night, when it is connected to wifi, connected to charge and locked (i.e. when I go to bed at night).

Because the one time it tried to backup to iCloud at the designated time you had no space - which is the error it keeps popping up.

It's trying to complete that scheduled backup, but because there is no more space on iCloud it can't and so it's telling you.

You need to either clear out space (items that backup to iCloud) or purchase additional iCloud space. Once you complete a backup where it no longer tells you that you are out of space it will go back to it's normal schedule.

Thanks. However, there is no 'normal schedule'. I just go to a shop and plug it into wifi whenever I want to back up to iCloud. Even if I have sufficient space on iCloud I absolutely don't want to backup on my data account as that sucks up my quota.
But I think you're right inasmuch as it kept trying to fulfill a previous request. I've fixed it by turning iCloud backup off. I tried turning it back on again, and it is behaving itself: it won't trying again till it's on wifi.
