I am helping an elderly relative. She is getting the scam message below when using Instagram. Not safari.

Some questions

  • how is it possible that Instagram can be “tricked” into showing this message? Is it just because she visited a particular account?
  • Most importantly how do I “fix” this for her.
  • how do I report this to apple? The “hypercleaner” app is one of those fake Chinese apps that has 5 star reviews that then tries to trick people into in-app purchases
  • As a opinion, I am so disappointed in Apple that this can still happen in 2024 to unsuspecting users.

Hmm, after some research it appears Instagram allows these popup ads. The only recourse I found was to download the app and give it a 1 star rating, and a nasty review.

Also, it was pointed out that clicking the ... in Instagram will let her "Report the ad" , which hopefully will tell the algorithm to stop sending it.
