I’ve never owned an iPhone although surrounded by iPhone users in my family and I’ve always owned an iPad.

If I wanted to try an iPhone what would be the comparable model to my Google Pixel 3 XL without downgrading on quality or features except I’m ok with a slightly smaller screen? I suppose a straight trade across from Android to IOS without the iPhone being a big upgrade over my Pixel 3 would be acceptable.

Would like to buy used or renewed to keep price down?

I would say, consider 8/8+ as the minimum. one is 4.7” while the other is 5.5”. Spec wise they are most likely faster and have better battery life. if you don’t like bezels, I would then skip 8/8+ and look at model with FaceID starting with X and up.

Yeah with my Pixel 3 XL having a 6.3" screen think I'd like to stay within the 5.8" to 6.1" range. Guess I don't have a strong preference on bezels either way but do think phones look better without them.

As far as I can tell I should be looking at either an iPhone XS or 11 to stay somewhat affordable in a used phone... do you agree?

I was able to lookup the battery on my Pixel and it's got a pretty big battery compared to a XS or 11 so guess I would be sacrificing a little there. My Pixel has a OLED screen like the XS while the 11 has a LCD. Not sure if after having a OLED screen I would miss it or not.

Do you think overall I would be happy with either a XS or a 11 and not feel I was giving up quality & features in an iPhone?

I'd suggest going with an 11 Pro Max or XS Max. Either will blow away the battery life you're used to with the Pixel 3 XL, both have screens akin to the Pixel 3 XL.

Just as an FYI, I went from a Pixel 4XL (having had the 3XL the year prior) to an iPhone 11 Pro Max.

What is your price point for iPhone? As far as OLED vs LCD, there are definitely differences and all being equal OLED being better, but Apple uses top quality LCDs but the same cant be sad about OLEDs and many Android vendors, so I am unsure where Pixel 3 XL lands.

I just moved to an iPhone 12 Pro from a Pixel 3XL last week! I was clinging to the Pixel because of the camera, but I've been pretty impressed with the 12 Pro so far.

Size-wise, while the pixel is overall a bit taller and wider, it doesn't make much of a difference in the hand. For the screen, especially when you take into consideration the bottom bezel of the Pixel, the screen sizes are extremely comparable.

Functionality-wise, the iPhone is on another level. The performance and smoothness over the Pixel 3XL immediately noticeable. I do think you're going to notice this on any iPhone you choose. Android/Pixel's Android experience has come a long way, but it's not quite to Apple's level of quality/refinement.

Because you're looking at something cheaper, the 12 Pro is probably not a great option unless you can get a killer deal. That being said, I would recommend any of the devices with Face ID. It will feel the closest to the 3XL experience. If you were using the gesture navigation on the Pixel, you're going to feel right at home using the iPhone gesture interface. I use an 8 for work and it definitely feels like a step down with the massive screen bezels and Touch ID.

First, welcome to MR.

I agree with @badqat. XS Max or 11 Pro Max. I've had all the phones in question here. These are almost exactly the same size as your pixel. Your Pixel is a good phone, but honestly the iPhone smokes it.

Bring the blue bubbles!!!

iPhone: 157.5 x 77.4 x 7.7 mm (6.20 x 3.05 x 0.30 in)
Pixel 3XL: 158 x 76.7 x 7.9 mm (6.22 x 3.02 x 0.31 in)

Oh - Re: Battery. You're going to notice a huge improvement with any iPhone model. Apple does a much better job with battery saving measures while idle, I've noticed this on both the 8 and the 12 Pro. My 3XL would constantly diminish through the day, even while not in use, and then nose-dive with screen-on time. I would regularly come in at the end of the day (11 p.m.) under 20% under medium use.

With my 12 Pro, I'm finding it difficult to get it under 50% at the end of the day with identical usage. A lot of people have been complaining about the 12 line-up battery, but that must be because they've never used an Android 😛

Tell that to my V50 10-12 hours SOT and V60 with incredible 15 hours SOT! 😂😂😂

I'd go with the 11. I wouldn't recommend anything earlier than the 11-series, as the camera will be a downgrade compared to your 3XL. If you have the funds, you could go with the 12 and you'd be satisfied as well.

Batttery on the 11 series will be better than the 3XL, and you'll probably also see better performance. The 3-series for the Pixels struggled with RAM management from my experience, although maybe Google fixed it.

Thanks everyone I didn’t know I was getting all these replies. Especially interesting to me is that so many were former Pixel 3 XL owners so I have a point of reference.

I’ve never used gestures with my 3 XL so not sure how big of a learning curve with an iPhone.

I may be able to go as high as $500 for a used iPhone but that’s about it.

I kind of have a love/hate relationship with the physical size of my 3 XL sometimes I just think it’s too big and heavy... other times it doesn’t bother me as much. I have no idea why I need such a big phone other than everyone else has one so what the heck. 🙂 Anyway I don’t watch movies, videos, etc. on it just mainly reading sports article, texting, & emailing.

I thought when I got another phone I might want to go a bit smaller like a 5.8” or 6.1”. Can you tell if there’s much difference in size with the 3XL 6.3” vs iPhone’s 6.1” size?

I wish I could afford a iPhone 12 but can’t so it’s a iPhone XS (or it’s bigger size models) or a iPhone 11. I go back and forth on this... XS has an OLED screen, smaller, but is a year older, while 11 has LCD screen, bit larger, newer chipset, maybe better camera etc.

How are the different bezel sizes of the XS vs 11 going to affect the perceived overall size of each model?

If anything it might look a bit narrower, but it’s really not noticeable. That size also makes it feel a bit more comfortable in the hand.

Guys I'm back ready to buy had a two month stay in rehab facility after kidney surgery. I probably never used my pixel 3 XL as much in my life so it confirmed my main issue. I think it's 6.3" size is too big for my hand plus with a good protective case I think it's heavy.

Made up my mine to buy a used 11 Pro on Swappa (iPhone 12 too expensive for me) and even went ahead and bought a case I liked even before I've purchased the phone. Got my case and whoa beside the 3 XL it looks small!

Now I'm having second thoughts wondering if I should buy a $5 case for a 11 to see what it looks like in comparison. I know it's listed at 6.1'' but thinking there won't really be that much difference between it and the 3 XL. If that's the case then the difference in size between the 11 & 11 Pro will look huge to me just like the 3 XL.

I'm wondering if I will adjust to the 11 Pro size when I feel the 3 XL is too big?

I'm keeping a close eye on Swappa listings so ready to jump on something!

Here's a question though a lot are listed as having around 91% battery health is that sufficient?
