Well I made this image of the iPhone to see how big it is in person. I set it in photoshop to be the same dimensions of the real thing. I also used a image with the keyboard on screen so you can get a idea for the size of the keyboard. So all you have to do it print it out.

For me it seems like it wouldn't be hard to type on this but I have normal sized fingers. But people that used it at macworld when it was announced said keys would enlarge before you touched them when your finger was hovering over so maybe it will be easier.

I for one was shocked by how small it is

it seems like the image got scaled down for the post but not sure, it seems small though

No, no. You're supposed to print out the pic from the OP. He scaled the dimensions of the pic in Photoshop so it will print out at actual size. Then you can practice typing on it from the printed sheet.

the size of the image on your computer screen is gonna depend on the resolution of your screen. you need to print it to get an accurate size.

You cannot rely on images on a monitor, the size will vary by your resolution and other variables. If you're really dying to know, print an image out and make sure that the printed copy matches the same dimensions as those specified on the Apple website.

no that is the right size, print it out and see, I printed it out and messured it it came out to the 4.5 long and 2.4

try it for yourself

I opened the image in photoshop and set the dimensions to the ones on the site, I didn't rely on my monitor

i really hope ur kidding, i could squish that thing with my fingers, u must know its alot larger than that

did you print it out or just look at it on your screen? if you go by the size on your screen its going to be different for everyone, well at least people using different screen sizes and resolutions.

you have to print it out to see the size

um, I have a better question. Why are we printing out iPhones? News flash guys... they are not gonna work. Dont mean to be rude but how big of a deal is the size right now?

I wanted to see how big the keys really were because of all the people saying how hard it will be to type on it. Also I wanted to get a feel for the size of the thing

What do you mean they are not going to work? I've been typing on mine just fine for the last 20 minutes. Its awesome.

There's no such thing as "hover" on common touchscreens. What happens with the iPhone keyboard is that the letter is show enlarged above the key when you press... and only registers when you release. You're supposed to be constantly watching that to make sure you have the right key, and if not, slide your finger in the right direction until the correct letter shows and then let up.

Yes, the keyboard is tiny. I keep telling web developers to do what you did, and see how big or small their own buttons are.

this is not common screen though. Watch the new High Technology video. It can tell how far your finger is from the screen and can allow the hover concept.

It actually uses a static charge from your hand to sense your fingers.

Yea I know that touch screens dont do this but when the guy from gizmodo used it at macworld he said the keys became larger as his had approached the phone.

Heres his quote
Keyboard: The softkey, on screen buttons are small. Think index finger, not thumb. Maybe I wasn't doing it right. The keys pop up when I put my finger down on the keys, but do you think the proximity sensor knows when I get close (but before I touch), and if I hover with my digit, it'll blow up the keys so they're easier to hit? (Am I making sense?)

Maybe I misunderstood what he was saying, im not sure if he is trying to explain how the keys enlarged when his finger hovered over or if he was hoping it was a feature they would include

yea in in the demo it shows the screen still picking up things from the finger when it is not touching the screen.

Exactly! It detects the charge from your hand and therefore knows how far away your hand is. Quite smart actually. It would be cool to see this used in a game or something.
