Hey guys and gals...

As we all know Apple has developed a great movie editor app named iMovie. It's super easy to use and has a lot of great tools.

There's also another amazing app by the name of reel director....same sort of idea.

I personally purchased both apps and have yet to really dive into each ones features and really take the time to play around with them. I've seen some fantastic work done with both.

I'd love to read everyone's opinions on whether they prefer iMovie or Reel Director and why?

For starters, I like the fact that with iMovie you can go directly into your device and pull a song to use....but with Reel Director you have to upload the music via wifi or through iTunes.
 
iMovie needs a ton more templates. The ones they have are nice but its needs much more other wise we are going to be seeing a lot of the same old templates up on YouTube. Would also like more fine controls in iMovie. Haven't had a chance to toy with Reel Directory yet.
 
I have been using iMovie and it gets the job done. I just got Reel Director today and have only tested it out quickly so I can not say which I like better yet. I am guessing that if I didn't have to use wifi or iTunes for music on RD then I might like that one better, but that is a major drawback in my opinion. With iMovie I love that I can be out at a location and make a movie complete with music right on the spot and load it to youtube and facebook (via Pixelpipe) right away and have people watching it before I even get home.

Can you please explain why you would have to go through pixelpipe to upload to youtube?

Just curious.

It would be interested that whichever you vote for - you indicated if you actually OWN both and can legitimately compare and contrast the two. Or if you only own one and just prefer that since that's what you use.

I see some people voted but haven't made any comments in the actual thread.
 
There needs to be an option for "both." I like certain features of each. In iMovie, you can edit and view your changes to your video in real time. In ReelDirector, you can do the same but it shows you stills at each second. In ReelDirector, you can add text to the video and control the length it shows in addition to individual volume control for every audio track. In iMovie, it has set volumes for both the video and songs, and most annoying of all, it displays the text throughout the entire duration of the clip you have selected it to show on. If ReelDirector had the same real time playback feature that iMovie did without having to render first to get a smooth playback, then ReelDirector would be the winner hands down. But until then, I will continue to use both according to my needs.
 
I own both. First of all, the latest update for Reel Director is supposed to give you the option to import music from the phone now without having to upload it to the app. I see the option (import from iPod Music), but haven't tested it just yet.

As for a comparison, I think Reel Director is a lot more powerful than iMovie. But it has to render the movies at the end which can take a long time. iMovie while less powerful, works real time. There's no rendering step involved. So that's a big plus.

For more input, I would have to play with both of them some more.
 
A lot of great points have been made about iMovie and RD.

If I could add the option of "I prefer to use both" I would, but it won't let me.

Also I agree with an earlier post...please let us know if you have only used the one and not the other or have tried both apps.

Here's a question for you all....

Once you edit a video say with iMovie...and then you save it to your camera roll...can you then open up that same video done with iMovie and use RD to edit it again with some features that RD offers?

Not sure if that's possible but if it is, it would be like having the best of both worlds.

example - If you like the effects from iMovie but also like the volume controls with RD

I've not tried it, but I'm sure you could. However, you would be importing the completed movie, not the project. So you would have to manually break it up if you wanted to insert something in the middle.

If you upload a video straight from iphone to youtube, the video quality will be highly compressed, and you will not get the 720p quality. In order to retain the 720p quality, you have to transfer the video from the iphone to computer first, then upload the video from the computer to youtube.
 
For someone like me who doesn't use the video feature too often, occasionally for work-related events but not much more, which of the two apps would be better? Or is there so little difference between the two that it really doesn't matter? All things being equal I might just end up going with the one that's $1 cheaper lol
 
I didn't see it mentioned above.

Reel Director now allows you to access your ipod's music from the phone. No more having to dump the music from a computer first.
