Pika - thanks for posting this.

This is a tough one for me, as I've held off waiting for TomTom. I like the UI and lane assist on the Navigon, but I also like the option of seeing the route ahead of time on the TT.

The Map Update: Unknown for both apps concerns me a little as I don't want to get hit with another fee in a few months.

Neither has TTS, but I'm not sure what "limited to road numbers" means with Navigon.

Under Route Types, TT seems to have the edge with the ability to avoid certain scenarios.

Having not used TT units in the past (I've got a Garmin), the "idea" of IQ routes has always appealed to me but I'm not sure how well they work in reality.

Ugh. If I'm going to bite the bullet on one of these, I'd like to do so soon (before Navigon's price goes up).

I guess my biggest question (and likely no one here can factually answer it) is what comes with future updates. How much does the playing field level out in terms of functions or will one take a huge leap forward? As important as a nice UI is, in the end routing is the most important. If they both acquire a signal well (and it appears that the TT cradle will work with both if Navigon opens that feature in their app) and neither gets me lost or wastes time by sending me on a longer-than-necessary route, I guess Navigon's UI and $30 savings wins out.

Where's G-Map!!?!

Silly to leave have left that one out.

Someone needs to take that chart and add it (someone who's more familiar with G-Map).

Also, the drive to Contacts works just fine in TomTom -- at least the 5 or 6 I tried last night. I'm guessing the chart-maker has some non-conventional issues with the way the address information is stored in the contact.

Pika thanks for posting this. It's great.
Now if I can find something like this for all those damn pano apps I can finally purchase one!

They need to update the chart again. TTS and a few other features already announced and on the way with v1.2 of Navigon.

Nice of you to copy our entire chart in full rather than linking to it! It is a live document though which is being updated regularly so please visit the original to see the latest data.

With regards to G-Map, it's not 'silly' to have omitted it. Our audience is primarily European and as we can't test that app we're a bit stuck because we're in the UK but we are happy to add it. As for Navigon, features that are 'coming soon' will be added when they actually arrive as 'coming soon' has many different meanings!

The TomTom Navigate to contact feature isn't working for many few users.

If anyone has any other observations please feel free to post them in our forums and we'll correct any errors. Hope it helps with the buying decision but of course much of it is subjective and one person's fave app is another's most hated!

Hey Darren,

Great chart, good job on all the details.

One question for you though, you have stated in numerous sections "yes if jailbroken" The particular one in question is, how would you install different navigation voices into the application.

Thank god for jailbreaking!

We're compiling instructions for each app as they're all different but for instance you can install other TT voices into the JB version, just use standard non-protected voices and rename them to overwrite.

I haven't done it as yet as my recently acquired 3GS isn't JailBroken <yet> but one of our Mods has.

You can also install custom POIs into others AND get alerts but not TT. Sygic is the best on that score.

TT isn't the best Nav App by a long measure and has omitted to much IMHO. CoPilot my personal fave on iPhone.

Great chart!

Under "Other Features," you should add RealityView Pro and LaneAssist Pro (for Navigon)...those are two of the most helpful features that I really like about Navigon.

Other than that, keep up the good work.

Agreed, and I really like the IQRoute option of TomTom.

Yeah, that's a big concern for me too.

Neither has TTS, but I'm not sure what "limited to road numbers" means with Navigon.
"limited to road numbers" means that it will say "Turn left onto Route 90 West," but it won't say "turn right onto Main Street," it'll just say "turn right in 50 yards." Road numbers are better than nothing, but it's moot anyway with 1.2 coming soon. ;)

Me neither, but I've heard good things about it. And living in SoCal with atrocious traffic most of the time, every little bit helps.

Ugh. If I'm going to bite the bullet on one of these, I'd like to do so soon (before Navigon's price goes up).
Me too. I'm going to have to decide before the end of the month. :( I'm just glad Navigon has extended it this long. And I'm leaning toward them, even with TomTom's IQRoutes and clearer (to me) layout.

One thing I like about TomTom is the ability to have information displayed at the bottom of screen such as: current speed, distance to next turn, distance to destination, time to destination and eta - however, none of the screenshots I've seen for the other apps seem to have all this information - the most I've seen is distance to next turn and time to destination. Can you customise these apps to show these details?

Navigon looks to be the best, but the lack of 7-digit post code searching kills it here (UK) for me.

CoPilot has a configurable info bar. Off the top of my head it has the usual stuff: Speed, ETA, Travel time, time to Next, Heading, Altitude, Distance.

What aspect of it is a particular problem for you? With Navigon once you enter the first 4/5 digits of the postcode it then takes you to the street names that apply to that part of the postcode and once you select the street it then asks you for the building number (as it would had it got 7 digit postcodes). So really the only limitation is that you need to know the road name in addition to the postcode. Alternatively you could look up the postcode in google maps and create a temporary contact and then use that to navigate to in Navigon.

They have also said that they are working on incorporating 7-digit search anyway, and at the current rate they are pushing out updates it probably won't take too long!

It shows that iGo My Way have more greens then the other GPS navigation apps.

This is missing quite a few things on the Navigon end.

For one, you can set Custom POI's - add it as a contact then select a contact to navigate to it.

Another is it can avoid certain roads and whatnot through the options/route profile.

Finally, if other apps have "Other Features" listed, why doesn't Navigon get "RealityView" and "LaneAssist" listed? Other than that, it's a great chart!

Copilot is EXACTLY what I need in a GPS app. The price is right and it works perfect. I've had no problems traveling around my town. TTS is not a dealbreaker for me. If we get it in a future update, that would be great. If not, I'd still rather have this app and save $65 over the Tom Tom app.

Any other feedback on Copilot? I do not want to spend the $$ for TomTom....... I am torn between Sygic and Copilot. Need to purchase something tonight!!

This is probably the best chart I have seen, great post! Only downfall is i'm in the US... so the obvious downfall is the currency, but it's a great way to show the features... I think I speak for a lot of the community when I say a lot have people have been looking for this type of information. thanks again!!!
