This can't be normal, can it?

My iPhone battery died today before I could get it on to charge and when it finally gathered itself enough juice to connect to iTunes, it said that that the iPhone needed to be restored before it could continue.

This is the second time this has happened. I find it hard to believe that a dead battery would trigger an error of proportions large enough to need to start all over in terms of the software (although I did notice earlier this afternoon when I synced the phone that I did have a crash report from the last time my battery died).

What gives? Does anyone else have to restore their iPhone this often?

Yes blackbelt, I've restored from backups both times.

David, there's nothing actually physically wrong with the unit, so what could AT&T do about it? I got it a week ago tomorrow, so I could drop in and see them, but I'm not sure what I'd tell them really... it seems software related more than hardware related (as far as I can tell).

when you restore from a back-up you could be restoring the problem that caused you to restore your phone. Try restoring your iPhone, but don't use a back-up (i.e. Set up as New iPhone)

The warranty only covers software related problems and anything physically wrong with the phone won't be covered by the warranty.;) If you tell them you already restored without a backup and restored with a backup multiple times, they may have to replace the iPhone. I have seem many hardware and software issues and 99.9% of the software issues are fixed either by Apple or a restore. Only about 30% of hardware issues are fixed because they are mainly caused by people dropping their iPhone in water or dropping it on the ground.
