iPhone no longer recognized by computer

For no apparent reason, my iphone can no longer connect to my computer. When I plug the dock connector in, it does nothing. No longer do I hear the little chime and see the large battery indicator to let me know it is connected to the computer and is charging and I can't get iTunes to see it. I tried switching cables and nothing. It's like it's not even there. What is going on?

I tried plugging it into the AC charger and it chimes and indicates that it is charging. I rebooted both my phone and computer and it still doesn't recognize that it is connected. I tried switching USB ports and nothing however it sees my iPod though so it is only affecting my iPhone. I even updated to itunes 7.5 and nothing. Tried fixing permissions. I'm beginning to suspect it has something to do with Leopard since upgrading last week.

Well I was *finally* able to force it into recovery mode and got itunes to see it and perform a restore. The weird thing is that I must have tried to force it into recovery mode at least a dozen times and could not get the connect icon to come up, it would just boot to the home screen while holding down the restart and home buttons. I think I've finally learned my lesson here and I'm not going to hack my phone until the SDK is released. If I had not been able to go into recovery mode I would have been totally screwed.

All you have to do is hold power+home till the screen goes blank and then let go of the power and continue to hold home for another 10sec. If the screen stays black you've done it correctly. I had this problem awhile ago when I was manually jailbreaking through terminal. Glad to hear it's fixed, sorry to hear you're scared of using AIM, VoiceRecorder, and TTR again... :/

Yes, I know how to force recovery mode but holding them down would only boot to the home screen and not show the connect to itunes screen. It definitely was not User Error. After rebooting it holding the home/power buttons about a dozen times it finally "decided" it should go into a recovery state. Pretty scary huh?

Is it ok to do this force recovery with a unlocked iphone?

i think it depends if you are unlocked on 1.0.2 or 1.1.1 - 0.2 is ok 1.1 isnt (i think)

Sh&t I have the 1.1.1 firmware, what should i do if my phone freezes up?
