My iPhone can't be synced from the music app when booting up from an Sandisk external ssd. It does not show up in the sidebar of the app or finder window.

Please provide at least some basics to ease the troubleshoot:
What kind of Mac model? How is the SSD connected?
Is the iPhone connected directly or via a hub? Does the iPhone indicate a connected cable?

Thanks "arw" and please forgive the lack of info.
Mac mini late 2014.
Sandisk SSD directly connected to the Mac.
I tried connecting the iPhone directly to the Mac as well as via a usb hub.
Mac OS 11.6 Big Sur
iOS 15.5

Thanks for any advice anyone has.

  • Have you installed the latest "Device Support Update" which might be necessary to access iOS 15.5 devices? It should be listed under "Other updates" in "Software Update".
  • How is the SSD connected - via Thunderbolt or USB?
  • Does the iPhone indicate a connected cable?
  • Does it work when booting from the internal disk? What OS are you running there?

Ok, weird...
All updated
But you know, 11.6.6 is the latest release?
System Info indicate iPhone is connected
What about the iPhone? Does it show the charging icon?

The last thing I can think of for now is the following:
  • Disconnect the device from your Mac
  • Open "Terminal"
  • Enter "killall AMPDevicesAgent" in the Terminal window, and press return.
  • Connect the Apple device back to your Mac.
edit: Did you check, that in Finder's settings "CDs, DVDs and iOS Devices" is checked? (Finder > Preferences from the Finder menu bar, then click Sidebar)

Yes macOS 11.6.6
Finder preferences are fine

I will try the terminal command and see how it goes.
Thanks
