iPhone not Recognized.

MacBook bought in 2007.
Mac OSX, newest updates.
iTunes 8.0.2, newest.
Old iPhone, cable that goes with it.

The phone charges but is not recognized in iTunes. I can access the camera. There is no device seen at all, sync is not an option. This phone is broken in that to make a call you have to use speaker, and it has no active service.

Although it is recognized on a desktop with XP and a Macbook Pro that was purchased in 2006-07. My Macbook just does not want to know it exists, other than charging it that is.

What is the problem? Is there a solution? Does this mean no iPods will show up on my computer?(The only other ipod I used was an old shuffle with the USB jack built in and it worked fine.)

I only have two and I tried both. I also reinstalled iTunes, restarted the computer and what not.

Is there no solution? I don't understand why mac would fail so much. This case is so simple, but apparently no one I can find has any idea what is happening. Are there similar but not exactly the same problems out there?

This happened to me last week. I took my phone to an Apple store where a "Genius" hooked my phone up to his Mac with no problem. When I got home I was still unable to have my MacBook recognize it. I called Apple and, as it turned out (and as I'd guessed), the iTunes software on my Mac was corrupted. He had me remove the iTunes application and preferences, restart iTunes, plug in my phone and all was fine.

I don't understand why mac would fail so much.

Your Fail Scale™ is skewed a lot lower than most.

Try a restore from DFU mode.

Solution found!

I moved my music files out of itunes music and deleted everything that had to do with itunes. Downloaded and installed a new itunes and loaded my music back in. The iPhone is now recognized. I believe the previous iTunes was corrupt. Thanks for the help.
