Is it possible to unlock an iPhone and use it with a vodafone sim card with unlimited txts and internet?

Ok, you've got at least 250 posts on here and have managed to find your way to the iPhone hacks forum which leads me to ask - SERIOUSLY?

If it's a 2G then easypeasy, use pwnage tool/quickpwn to unlock it, if it's a 3G then it's trickier. Mroogle, and then follow the tutorials on iClarified. And it would help if you clarified anything at all about your situation. First things first, which country are you in? Do you already own an iPhone?

Does Vodafone in the UK use GSM sim cards? Will I be able to get 3G internet etc?

Yes and Yes. If you get one with the current baseband, then you will need to either try to downgrade the BB or use something like a Rebel SIM

As said, the sticky thread about jailbreaking/unlocking will cover everything you need to know

I've read on some sites that if you are using a sim card other than the official carrier, some apps won't work on the internet apart from Safari. Is this true?

On Vodafone you won't be able to use "Vodafone Live" for internet or any add-ons that use that service. It requires a proxy, which you can't enter on iPhone. On older os versions such as 1.1.3/4 you could do a hack requiring a proxy.pac file and another edit...but it seems this doesn't work on 2.0 + . At least I couldn't get it to work or modify it to work, and couldn't find any details on the internet regarding this issue.

You can still use the isp APN though.

Its just a phone optimized browser that provides you with a Vodafone front end with links to some of their sections and external sites.

Don't worry about it. Just jailbreak, unlock, and put the SIM in. Put the APN settings in and then browse via safari. I haven't come across anything that doesn't work yet and I use Safari, FB, Cydia, App Store. All work fine
