Just read an interesting article on the Apple ZDnet blog franchise AT&T (Cingular) stores will not be carrying the iPhone - only 'corporate' owned AT&T stores will be carrying the iPhone, due to some legal issues. I don't know how many stores are franchise vs. corporately owned, but this is something you may want to check into before you pitch your tent at your local store.
Supposedly each corporate store will also have 300 iPhones on hand initially...

I talked to one of the third-party stores. Apple doesn't trust them to not discount the iPhone at launch. AT&T Corporate stores have a 6 month exclusivity contract for the phone before third-party providers are allowed to sell them.

good to know. i was planning on going to the corporate store anyway, as i assumed they'd get the most in stock. it was tempting to go by the small store near my house and wait. guess not anymore.
