Hi all,

I own an iPhone X and thoroughly enjoy it; this question is not from me, but one of my friends is growing tired of some of the limitations of her 2018 budget Android (Samsung J Series).

She finds it to be painfully slow, and it's developing dead spots in one of the corners of the screen in spite of replacing the screen. So wants to get something that will last (Build quality and longevity). My current thoughts are to suggest a refurbished iPhone 8, but she is a student and working to a budget of around £300 so that is out of the question.

What low cost options would you recommend? I have not looked outside of the Apple ecosystem since 2009 so please enlighten me with all options welcome! I am trying to go against my default response of the X or above as it's far beyond the budget!

TL;DR?: What would you suggest that is:
  • Around a budget of £300
  • Light usage, minimal games (Jazzy solitaire with animations and such)
  • Build quality and longevity
  • Acceptable battery life for a day at University

I’d recommend an iPhone 7 Plus. They have 3GB of ram, A10 and should have good battery life. Huge upgrade from a Samsung J series. She would likely have to purchase from a site such as Swappa or whatever the UK equivalent site is but it should be around that price.

If she would prefer Android, look into a Pixel 3A.

Thank you,

I think she is leaning towards Android but is unsure about another Samsung so the Pixel suggestion is really welcome! As for the 7+ I did suggest my old one of these but she'd like a smaller device than the phablet, but still a very good point. Thank you! I shall update the thread title.

I do think the Galaxy S9 represents very good value and cannot be much more than £300.

Pixel 3A, as suggested, is simply the best phone camera money can buy.

I'm sure she could also pick up a used OnePlus 6T which is also excellent.

In my limited research tonight, the S9 has got my attention and weighs in and around budget so with a bit of digging, thank you again!
